BANGOR, Maine --- Junior Sonja Morse
(South China, Maine / Cony) threw a pair of complete games and finished
with 15 strikeouts overall as the Thomas College softball team swept a
North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Husson University at O'Keefe
Field.
Morse allowed three hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts as the
Terriers (7-12, 2-0 NAC) captured the opener by a 2-0 score. In the
nightcap, she scattered two runs on seven hits and five walks while
striking out five as Thomas held on for a 3-2 victory over the Eagles
(5-17, 1-3 NAC).
Game 1: Thomas 2, Husson 0
In addition to getting the win in the circle, Morse also
scored the game's first run, coming home on an attempted double steal
after drawing a one-out walk earlier in the frame.
The Terriers added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Senior Lindsy Hoopingarner
(Richmond,
Maine / Richmond) reached on a one-out single to left field,
advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single through the
left side by pinch-hitter Michaella Arsenault (fr., Poland, Maine / Poland).
In addition to her single in the seventh, Hoopingarner also threw out
a couple of runners on defense -- Brianna Bires at second base in the
third inning and Gabrielle Bryant at third in the fifth inning.
Sophomore Jordanna Agger
(South Portland, Maine / Wells) finished 2-for-3 with a pair of
singles. The first came in the second inning to put runners at the
corners and set up the double steal attempt on which Morse scored. The
second was a one-out single to left center in the fifth.
Husson's Alannah Healy took the loss in game one, allowing two runs
on just four hits and a pair of walks while striking out six.
The Eagles were limited to base hits from Lyndsay Merrill in the second, Bires in the third and Sami Cyr in the fifth.
Game 2: Thomas 3, Husson 2
Morse and Healy continued their pitching duel well into the
nightcap. While Morse made it the full seven innings, Healy lasted until
the fifth before being relieved by Olivia Smith.
Each team stranded a runner in the first inning and was set down in order in the second.
After Thomas squandered a two-out single by freshman Lexi Colpack
(Franklin, N.H. / Franklin) in the top of the third, Husson got its
first good opportunity in bottom half of the frame as Mallory Conary
reached when a dropped third strike squirted past Hoopingarner. After a
walk to Bires, both runners advanced 60 feet as Kristen Chipman dropped
down a sacrifice bunt back to Morse. The rally would be stunted,
however, as Merrill flew out to Courtney Veilleux (jr., Oakland, Maine / Messalonskee) in right field.
Thomas grabbed the lead in the fourth as Morse and senior Korrie Laren
(Blackstone, Mass. / Blackstone-Millville) opened the frame with
back-to-back singles. The pair moved into scoring position on an Agger
sacrifice bunt and Morse plated the first run on an RBI single by
Hoopingarner that squirted under the glove of a diving Merrill at
shortstop. After a strikeout by pinch-hitter Arsenault, Molly Carroll
(fr., Southwest Harbor, Maine / Mount Desert Island) made it 3-0 with a
two-run double to the wall in right field that scored pinch-runner Randi Dennett (so., Winthrop, Maine / Winthrop) and Hoopingarner.
The Eagles continued to threaten, leaving runners on the corners in
the fourth inning and stranding Kristen Chipman at second base in the
fifth after a two-out double to left.
The Terriers loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth as Hoopingarner reached on a bloop single to right, Cassie Contigiani
(fr., Belmont, N.H. / Belmont) was hit by a pitch and Carroll shot a
single to left field, but the Eagles got out of the jam without any
further damage done when Madison Bentz (jr., Ottawa, Ill. / Ottawa Township) flew out to right to end the inning.
Husson cut into the lead with a pair of runs in their half of the
sixth inning as Richard scored on a hard single through the left side
and Andrade crossed when Hill reached on a fielding error at second
base.
The Eagles' had an opportunity to tie the game in the seventh as
Merrill reached with a one-out single to left, but Casey Lopes hit a
grounder to short to start a game-ending double play.
Morse improved to 7-3 in the circle with her second complete-game
effort of the day, while Colpack, Hoopingarner and Carroll each finished
2-for-3 at the plate. Veilleux added a double and Morse and Laren each
had a single as the Terriers finished with nine hits overall.
Merrill and Lopes each had two hits to lead Husson.
Thomas continues North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday with a 1
p.m. doubleheader at Castleton University. After that, the Terriers
embark on a 10-game homestand, hosting five doubleheaders in an 11-day
stretch.
