Monks Silence Bowdoin Softball in Tuesday Night Twinbill

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph's softball team used a walk-off single in the seventh inning to secure the twinbill sweep of Bowdoin on Tuesday evening.

The Monks (17-11) jumped out to an early lead in game one to take a 5-2 victory. Bowdoin (14-13-2) held the hosts to one run until the final inning when Saint Joseph's tallied a one-out single to end the game 2-1.

Game One Highlights
  • Saint Joseph's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first behind an RBI single from Mariah Harrison and an unearned run off one of Bowdoin's four errors in the game.
  • After reaching first on an error to begin the second, Katie Chadbourne eventually scored to extend the Monks lead to three.
  • Harrison lofted a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the sixth to drive in Saint Joseph's fourth run of the game and another Polar Bear error allowed the hosts to take a 5-0 lead.
  • Bowdoin put a pair of runs on the board in the final inning as the Polar Bears put runners on first and second for an RBI single by Caroline Rice. Ali Miller added to the tally with a sacrifice fly to right.
  • Saint Joseph's held a 12-8 edge in hits, led by Jennifer Murphy who went 3-for-4. Katie Gately paced the Bowdoin offense by going 2-for-3.
  • Julia Geaumont pitched all six innings for Bowdoin and allowed only two earned runs with five strikeouts.
Game Two Highlights
  • Melodie Bailey launched a solo homerun to leadoff the bottom of the first.
  • Bowdoin evened the game at 1-1 in the third, a score that would stand until the final inning, as Geaumont tagged an RBI single to center field that scored Claire McCarthy.
  • The two teams traded quick innings until the bottom of the seventh. With runners on first and second, Kelsy Gaddy knocked a single up the middle for a walk-off victory over the Polar Bears.
  • Samantha Roy started the game for Bowdoin and pitched four innings with four hits allowed and one run. Emily Griffin pitched the final 2.1 innings.
  • McCarthy and Lauren O'Shea each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

  • Bowdoin plays a doubleheader at UMaine-Farmington on Thursday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
