McAvoy shines in debut, 'Dogs win 6-2

Reading, PA - The Portland Sea Dogs (2-1) had the hot bats on a cold night in Reading, defeating the Fightin Phils (1-2) 6-2 at FirstEnergy Stadium. There was snow in most of the area, with the game time temperature 34 degrees.

 

Kevin McAvoy was solid in his Double-A debut for Portland. The righty worked five innings, giving up only two runs on a single to Christian Marrero in the third. McAvoy finished his outing with two perfect innings and earned his seventh win in his last eight starts dating back to last year.

Portland scored five of six runs with two outs, striking for two runs in the first off losing pitcher Nick
Pivetta (3.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R). Rainel Rosario picked up his first RBI in the Red Sox system with a single to left. With two outs, Aneury Tavarez laced a run-scoring single over the shortstop.

The two-out party continued in the fourth inning off Pivetta. Portland had five straight two-out singles: Jordan Weems, Tzu-Wei Lin, Mike Miller (RBI), Cole Sturgeon (RBI) and Jantzen Witte (RBI).

Chandler Shepherd worked two perfect innings in his Double-A debut and Luis Ysla pitched the final two frames for his first Double-A save.

The 'Dogs scored their sixth run on a wild pitch by Joely Rodriguez. Portland received a hit from eight of nine starters.

The Sea Dogs and Reading Fightin Phils close out their four-game series this afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. Pre-Game coverage on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network began at 1:45 PM with first pitch at 2:05. RHP Teddy Stankiewicz makes his Double-A debut for Portland. RHP Ricardo Pinto gets the start for the Fightins.
