Sam Dexter, the D3baseball.com National Player of the Year in 2015,
broke a 7-7 tie with a bases loaded triple to get the Huskies their
deciding runs. Jake Dexter, a first-year, was hit by a pitch in the 11th
inning and scored on his brother’s triple. Jake Dexter also pitched the
final two innings to earn his second collegiate victory.
Paul McDonough had three hits and three RBI for the Huskies (15-5),
who trailed 6-3 heading into the top of the eighth inning. Sam Stauble
had four hits, while Kyle O’Connor came of the bench and went 2-for-2
and scored twice.
Matt Mitchell led Colby (5-14) with two hits, two runs, and an RBI.
Andrew Currier and Tommy Forese both had two hits, scored a run, and
drove in a run. Andrew Della Volpe also had two hits for Colby.
The Huskies were credited with seven errors in the game, but
Colby’s two errors in the contest came in the same inning and aided the
USM comeback.
O’Connor started the 11th inning off with a single and moved to
second on a sacrifice by Nick Dibiase. The Mules were able to get the
second out of the inning, but Jake Dexter was hit by a pitch. Jack
Sylvia singled to load the bases and Sam Dexter followed with a triple
on a 2-1 count. Sam Dexter had been twice walked intentionally earlier
in the game.
USM scored two runs in the top of the second inning thanks to RBI singles from Kaleb Bridgham and McDonough.
The Mules had one of their biggest innings of the season with six
runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Huskies had four errors in
the inning, while the Mules received RBI singles from Mitchell, Forese,
and Currier.
The Huskies had a lone run in the sixth inning to make it a 6-3
game. McDonough had an RBI double to score pinch-runner Nick Volger.
Southern Maine added two unearned runs in the top of the eighth
inning to cut the margin to 6-5. Dibiase and Kip Richard both reached on
errors to start the inning. McDonough had an RBI single to plate
Dibiase, while Richard came across to score on a bases loaded walk.
In the bottom of the eighth, Colby went up by two runs with a
single run. Mitchell singled with two outs, moved to second on a single
by Ryan Quinn and came across to score on an outfield throwing error.
Down to their final three outs, the Huskies managed to send the
game into extra innings with a pair of runs. O’Connor led off with a
double, Dibiase singled, and Richard followed with another single to
bring in O’Connor. Tom Budrewicz later had a sacrifice fly to drive in
Dibiase.
