HS Girls Soccer: Morse Defeats Lincoln Academy

Newcastle, Maine - Morse opened the 2015 season with a tightly contested 2 - 1 victory at home against Lincoln Academy.  The teams not only battled each other but also had to deal with the high heat and humidity.

The Shipbuilders came out fast and controlled play early.  They broke through in the 34th minute as an Emma Rossetti free kick found Abby Minott who pushed it past the diving LA keeper.  Morse kept up the pressure and found the back of the net again (21 min) as Macie Gagne scored her first Morse goal (freshman) when she redirected a Minott pass into the net.

Not long after (17 min) LA benefitted from a goal mouth scrammble making the score 2 - 1 in favor of Morse.  The half ended with no further scoring.

In the second half, the effect of the heat slowed the pace of the game.  Much of the play was in the LA defensive end but the Shipbuilders were unable to get that third goal.  LA had a couple promising counter attack opportunities but the defense of Hope Faulkingham, Rossetti, Sierra Wallace, Baylie Cram and Mae Winglass minimized the threat.  Morse keeper Marissa Parks turned away 10 shots in her varsity debut.

Next for the Shipbuilders is Oceanside at home on Friday.

Morse Stats:
Goals:  Abby Minott, Macie Gagne

Assists:  Emma Rossetti, Abby Minott

Shots: 18

Saves:  10
