WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College women's soccer team was defeated
by the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-0 in a non-conference game
on Smith Field Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies struck first ten minutes into the first half. Sarah
Michaud received a pass from CC Pelletier just inside the 18 and fired
the ball into the right side of the goal to give USM the early 1-0 lead.
The Huskies scored two quick goals within three minutes midway
through the half to extend their lead to 3-0. Katherine Hunziker scored
the second Huskies goal on an assist by Dayna Staffiere. Hana McNally
scored off a free kick from just outside the 18 to give USM their third
goal of the half.
USM added one more goal in the closing minutes of the first half. The
ball was sent in towards net, where Hunziker tipped it to Kara
Sampsell, who deflected it into the back of the net to give the Huskies a
4-0 lead into halftime.
The visitors scored the only goal of the second half five minutes
into the period. Emma Dennison struck a corner kick towards net that was
headed in by Ariana Davidson to give USM the 5-0 lead. The Thomas
defense settled down after the early goal and did not allow another the
rest of the game.
Marissa Temple recorded the shutout for the Huskies, stopping all four shots on goal in the win. Paige Leary, who was relieved by Ashley Gooden in the second half, was tagged with the loss.
Thomas will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 16 against cross-town rival Colby at 7:00 pm on Smith Field.
