UMF Women’s Lax Loses a Heartbreaker to Green Mountain

CASTLETON, Vt. – University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse (2-4, 0-3) could not hold off Green Mountain College (3-5, 2-1) on Saturday night for a 9-7 North Atlantic Conference loss at Castleton University's Spartan Stadium.

The Beavers grabbed the first lead of the contest two and a minutes in with Alaina Shorey (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) scoring a goal as Sierra Gilley (Harspwell, Maine/Mt. Aratat) came through with the assist.

After the Eagles scored on a free position goal, Shorey answered with her second goal of the evening after Carly Raymond (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Aratat) dished the assist.

Mara Balboni (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) added an insurance goal for UMF nearly the midway
point of the first half after Rhi Jackson (Saco, Maine/Waynflete) contributed the assist.

Green Mountain tied the game at 3-3 but Balboni notched her second goal of the game at 10:22 to give UMF a 4-3 lead once again.

The Eagles would not go away and scored two more goals at the end of the half to retake a 5-4 lead headed into the break.

After Green Mountain added a goal to begin the final half, Farmington came back with three unanswered goals to claim a 7-6 lead. Balboni charted her third score of the game with the other two goals coming from Raymond and Rebecca Young (Plainfield, N.H./Kimball Union Academy), who scored her first-career goal.

Green Mountain tied the game at 7-7 at 14:11 and then added a pair of goals late in the half to steal the conference win.

Alyssa Arsenault (Winthrop, Maine/Winthrop) stopped eight shots for the Beavers between the pipes.
A key stat for the Beavers was seven missed free position opportunities whereas the Eagles cashed in on 6-of-11 attempts.

Megan Scully tallied a game-high five goals for Green Mountain. Catie Brewster added a pair of goals and won four draw controls.

UMaine-Farmington plays its non-conference finale on Monday at Southern Maine.
