Thomas Late Lead Slips Away on Senior Day

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Thomas College women's lacrosse team fell to Green Mountain College, 9-8, in a North Atlantic Conference game Saturday afternoon on Smith Field. Seniors Brittany Fox (Lovell, Maine, Fryeburg Academy), Crystal Leavitt (Phippsburg, Maine / Morse), and Erin Nelligan (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) were honored prior to their final regular season home game.

Thomas (2-7, 2-4 NAC) had four players score two goals, including Nelligan, Hailey Mullen (So., South Portland, Maine / South Portland), Samantha Greenlaw (So., Windham, Maine / Windham), and Lindsey Allen (Jr., Jay, Maine / Spruce Mountain). Green Mountain (4-6, 3-2 NAC) was led offensively by Megan Scully with three goals.

Greenlaw put the Terriers on the board first with an unassisted goal four minutes into the game. She
added her second less the two minutes later on a free position shot to jump the Terriers to an early 2-0 lead. Nelligan found the back of the net midway through the first half on an unassisted goal to extend the Thomas lead to 3-0.

The Eagles answered back in the latter stages of the first with four unanswered goals. Catie Brewster, Martha Howe, Rachel Aramburu, and Scully all recorded tallies during the run. Mullen added another Thomas goal with five minutes left in the half to knot the game at 4-4.

Allen scored off a feed from Greenlaw with three minutes remaining in the period to put Thomas up 5-4, but Maegan Laymon tied things up again with ten seconds remaining to bring the score to 5-5 at the half.

Allen scored her second of the game from Greenlaw just 35 seconds into the second half to put the Terriers up 6-5. The Eagles answered right back again, however, on Howe's second of the game.

Mullen regained the lead for Thomas on a goal assisted by Allen with 26 minutes remaining. Nelligan pushed the lead to 8-6 with her second goal seven minutes later.

The Terriers were unable to hold the lead, however, surrendering two unassisted goals to Scully at the eight and six minute marks, and the eventual game winner to Brewster with two minutes remaining, bringing the final score to 9-8.

Thomas outshot the Eagles 23-20 and also held a 16-12 edge in ground balls. The Eagles won 12 of 19 draws in the contest.

Chelsea Wimble earned the win in goal stopping six of fourteen shots. Fox was tagged with the loss, surrendering nine goals and making eight saves.

The Terriers finish the season with two North Atlantic Conference road games. They'll first travel to Husson on Wednesday, April 20 for a 3:30 p.m. match, and then wrap up the regular season the following Monday, April 25 in a 1:30 p.m. game at UMaine-Farmington.
