Mules Overpower Mariners

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Colby College on Tuesday afternoon, 27-3 in non-conference action on Ritchie Field.

The Mules jumped out to a 3-0 lead following goals from Alex Rutan, Kevin Seiler and William Erwin. Chase Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine) put the Mariners on the board with an unassisted scored at 4:44 cutting the deficit to just two goals, but Colby scored the next twelve goals to build a 15-1 lead into the third quarter. Dean Samuelson (Southbury, Conn.) scored twice in the third quarter, but the deficit proved to be too much for the Mariners and the Mules claimed the 27-3 victory.

Samuelson led the Maine Maritime Academy offense with two goals, on five shots, while causing a
turnover and scooping up five ground balls. Whittemore recorded his second goal of the season, while scooping up a ground ball and Brendan Broderick (Massena, N.Y.) dished out an assist and scooped up a ground ball. Justin Kretzmer (Glastonbury, Conn.) tallied a team-high three caused turnovers, while Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) led the Mariners with six ground balls and an impressive 23 saves in net. Schell's 23 saves rank fourth all-time in Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse single-game history.

Kevin Seiler led the Mules with four goals, while Harrison Alpaugh, Thomas Brewster, and William Erwin each recorded hat tricks. Kenny Jacobson led the Mules with three caused turnovers, and Max Eberhart scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls, going 18-of-21 from the faceoff. Dylan Rothenberg earned the victory in net for the Mules, tallying one save in 25 minutes of play, and C.J. Layton stopped two shots in nearly 30 minutes in net, and Justin Waligory went untested in net in the final six minutes of the game.

The Mariners fall to 2-6 on the season, while the Mules improve to 3-7. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, April 9 when they host Johnson State for a North Atlantic Conference matchup at 1:00 p.m. on Ritchie Field.
