Colby men’s lacrosse drops league game

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Colby College men’s lacrosse team fell victim to a late scoring run by Wesleyan University in a 15-8 setback at Harold Alfond Stadium on Saturday.

Quentin DellaFera had three goals and four assists and teammate Carter Hawthorne had five goals for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals (6-2 overall, 2-2 NESCAC) only led 10-7 halfway into the final quarter. However, Wesleyan went on a 5-0 scoring run to pull away.

Colby first-year Colton Michel had three goals and two assists, while teammate Kevin Seiler also had three goals. Sam Wasserman and Cillian Connor had the Mules’ other goals.

DellaFera led the way with seven points, but Hawthorne was right behind him with the five goals and one assist for six points. Taylor Ghesquiere finished with three goals and one assist, Harry Stanton also had three goals, and Niall Devaney finished with one goal and two assists.

Colby goaltender Dylan Rothenberg had six of his 10 saves in the opening quarter to help the Mules
take a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes. Colby led 2-0 and 3-1 in the quarter.

Wesleyan took the lead for good with the only four goals of the second quarter to go up 7-4 at halftime.

The Mules got as close as 7-5 in the third quarter when Seiler scored from Alex Rutan with 11:06 remaining. Hawthorne scored two straight goals for a 9-5 lead, but the Mules closed the quarter with a Michel score with 2:28 remaining.

The Cardinals and Colby traded goals in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter until the 5-0 scoring run.

Wesleyan goalie Ted Bergman stopped nine shots, had five ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Quinn Mendelson had a big day on defense, causing six turnovers and scooping three ground balls for the Cardinals.

Colby (2-7, 0-5 NESCAC) received three caused turnovers and four ground balls apiece from Kenny Jacobson and Brad McCarthy.

The Cardinals had an 18-for-26 advantage on face-offs and a 45-36 margin on shots. Jason Gibson was 12-for-16 on face-offs for the winners. Colby’s Max Eberhart had eight face-off wins and four ground balls.
