CASTINE, Maine – Freshman Brendan Broderick
(Massena, N.Y.) scored a career-high six goals and dished out four
assists to lead Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse to a commanding
18-5 victory over Johnson State on Saturday afternoon, in North Atlantic
Conference action.
Broderick put the Mariners on the board with the first goal of the
game at 12:40. The Badgers responded at 6:02 when Mason Phillips
connected with Isaiah Leraeu to tie things up at 1-1. Broderick added
his second goal of the game to send the Mariners into the second quarter
with a 2-1 lead.
Broderick picked up where he left off in the second quarter, opening up the scoring on a man-up goal,
assisted by Dean Samuelson (Southbury, Conn.). Michael Martel (Biddeford,
Maine) grabbed an unassisted goal to give the Mariners a 4-1 lead with
8:43 remaining in the second quarter. Leraue added his second goal of
the game to close the gap to two goals, but the Mariners outscored the
Badgers 3-1 in the final five minutes of the half to take a 7-3 lead
into the intermission.
The Mariners added 11 goals in the second half, outscoring the Badgers 11-2 to take the decisive victory.
Broderick's six goals and four assists rank him eighth all-time in
Maine Maritime Academy single-game history in points and seventh
all-time in goals scored in a single-game. Broderick tallied 15 shots,
12 on goal, and scooped up three ground balls. Samuelson ended his
outing with four goals and an assist while tallying 10 shots on goal,
scooping up six ground balls and causing two turnovers.
Chase Whittemore
(Skowhegan, Maine) net his first-career hat trick, on six shots on
goal, adding four ground balls and a caused turnover, while both Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) and Tim Grant (East Northport, N.Y.) net two goals apiece. Tim Grant led the Mariners with eight ground balls, going 7-of-16 on the faceoff. Alec Grant (Hollis, N.H.) led the Mariner defense with four caused turnovers, and Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) scooped up seven ground balls and recorded one save in the victory in net for the Mariners.
Leraeu led the Badgers with a hat trick and Jefferson Lawler tallied a
goal and a game-high 13 ground balls, going 16-of-27 on the faceoff,
while Kane Avery recorded the other goal for the Badgers.
The Mariners improve to 3-6 overall and 3-0 in the NAC, while the
Badgers fall to 0-6 on the season and 0-3 in the conference. Maine
Maritime returns to action on Saturday, April 16 at Castleton for a 2:30
p.m. NAC matchup.
