Volleyball at 3-0 in NESCAC after win over Bates

LEWISTON, Maine — The Colby College volleyball team is in first place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference and won another league match by a 3-0 score in a big victory over rival Bates College on Friday night at Alumni Gym.

Playing at Bates is never easy and the final score was closer than it looks. All three sets were close before Colby (6-3 overall) pulled away at the end for 25-23, 25-21, 25-20 scores. Colby plays at Rivier College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
 
The Mules are 3-0 in the conference for the first time since the glory days of 2005. Colby won the NESCAC (10-0) and New England titles before going to the final eight of the NCAA Division III Championships.
 
Colby has not allowed a NESCAC opponent to take a set in 3-0 wins against Wesleyan, Trinity, and the Bobcats.
 
Kim Donaldson continued her fine play with 11 kills, a hitting percentage of .417, and four blocks. She had just one attack error in 24 attempts.
 
Emily Moslener finished with 17 assists and six digs, Natalie Roy added 19 digs, Paige Hanssen had 12 digs and two aces, Emily Maidman contributed seven kills and 10 digs, Sarah Arvidson had six kills and 12 digs, and Alexa Busser blocked four and added six kills.
 
Chandler McGrath led Bates with 10 kills and 16 digs, Claire Naughton added nine kills, and Laryssa Schepel led in aces (4) and had 16 digs. The Bobcats hurt their own cause with 30 attack errors compared to Colby’s 14.
 
The Mules led 23-22 in the first set when Donaldson had a kill from Moslener for a lead of two points. Colby scored its final point on an attack error by Bates.
 
Colby trailed 21-19 in the second set, but rallied behind Moslener. She had an ace to tie the match at 21-21 and then had four sets for kills to Arvidson, Hanssen, and two to Donaldson.
 
The Mules were losing 11-8 in the third set, but exploded for a 7-0 run for a 15-11 margin. With a lead of 21-20, Colby was helped out by three Bates attack errors and an ace from Elizabeth Noyes.
