Diabetes management program set for February 17
Lewiston, Maine - Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, the hormone needed to transport glucose from the blood into the cells of the body for energy. A symptom for this condition is high blood sugar. Some 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, including an estimated 8.1 million who are undiagnosed. About 40 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes have not achieved the blood sugar control target of an A1C level of less than 7 percent, as recommended by the American Diabetes Association for many people with diabetes. The A1C test measures average blood glucose levels over the past two-to three-month period.
On February 17 the Central Maine Endocrinology and Diabetes Center will host a free program entitled “Managing Diabetes: The Next Step” and presented by an “A1C Champion”, says Jamie Pepin, a clinical dietician and diabetic educator who is organizing the series. The goal of the 60-minute presentation, according to Pepin, is to show those with diabetes "how to optimally manage their diabetes."
The event is part of an ongoing series sponsored by pharmaceutical company Sanofi, and is part of the A1C Champions educational program that helps people learn to successfully manage their own diabetes, and share information, advice, and motivation with others.
Pepin encourages those who are interested in learning better strategies for managing their diabetes to attend this free event, which will be held beginning at 6 p.m. in Conference Room 2 at the Maine College of Health Professions, 70 Middle Street, Lewiston.

Football Season Preview: Bates looks to make a leap forward

"We've been 4-4 for a couple of years, and we're hoping to get over that hump, get to 5-3, 6-2, steal some games from some of the top teams," said junior linebacker Mark Upton (Winthrop, Mass.), one of two returning First Team All-NESCAC selections along with senior wide receiver Mark Riley (Needham, Mass.), in a recent interview with the Boston Globe.
The Bobcats have claimed two of the past three CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) titles outright, and have at least a share of four of the past six in the CBB series. The Portland Press Herald's CBB preview noticed that Bates has "enjoyed the most success of the three schools recently."
No opponent can be penciled in as a win, certainly, but if Bates is to not only maintain but improve upon its recent performance, it may require beating an opponent it hasn't beaten in at least nine years, such as Amherst, Middlebury or Wesleyan. With all three of those opponents occupying the first five weeks of the season, Bates hope to ring up an upset win or two. Said head coach Mark Harriman to the Press Herald, "I think we've got a great group this year. We'll see where we are Saturday."
One new wrinkle to the team this year is the addition of three recent alumni to the coaching staff.

With a team-high 21 kills, junior Chandler McGrath (Seal Beach, Calif.) reached the 20-kill mark for the third time this week, and the fourth time in her career. She added 12 digs for her second double-double this season.
Sophomore Lisa Slivken (New York, N.Y.) contributed 10 kills while first-year Claire Naughton (Darien, Conn.) posted nine kills and three blocks. Sophomore Jacqueline Forney (Bloomington, Ind.) had a team-high 26 assists to go with nine digs, while junior Hannah Tardie (Orange, Calif.) also had a double-double with 17 assists and 17 digs.
Bates scored the final three points to come back from a 15-14 deficit in the fifth and deciding set. Tardie clinched the victory with a setter's drop shot over the net, her fifth kill of the match.
Senior Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) had a match-high 30 digs, while sophomore Augy Silver (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) was one of four Bobcats also in double figures in digs, with 13.
Kate Giddens had match highs of 22 kills and five service aces, including seven kills and four aces in the first set, as the Bantams took a 1-0 lead. Bates schemed better against Giddens as the match wore on, blocking some attempts and getting under the ball to dig others out of harm.
Hunter Drews added 16 kills and 13 digs for the Bantams (2-4, 0-2 NESCAC). Hannah Engstrom had seven kills and a team-high 15 digs. Gina Buzzelli had a match-high 41 assists with 11 digs, and Rachel Underwood contributed 14 digs.
Following Friday night's 3-1 win over Wesleyan, the Bobcats (3-4, 2-0 NESCAC) have won back-to-back NESCAC matches for the first time since 2004. Bates had not won two conference matches in a season since 2010, and hadn't defeated Trinity since 2008.
Bates has a non-conference match at Maine Maritime on Wednesday at 7pm.

| Chandler McGrath has 42 kills in her past two matches, after leading Bates to a 3-1 victory over Wesleyan on Sept. 18, 2015. (Josh Kuckens/Bates College) |
Bates (2-4, 1-0 NESCAC) displayed superior backline defense and service reception, led by senior Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.; 26 digs), allowing the Bobcat attack to catch fire. After hitting at a .107 rate in the first set, .179 in the second and .103 in the third, the Bobcats attacked at a .417 percentage in the deciding set. Sophomore captain Jacqueline Forney (Bloomington, Ind.) passed out 32 assists and junior Hannah Tardie (Orange, Calif.) added 15.
While other hitters such as sophomore Lisa Slivken (New York, N.Y.; 9 kills) and senior Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.; 7 kills) got hot at various points, McGrath (Seal Beach, Calif.) was Bates' go-to option when points meant the most. With the score 19-18 in Wesleyan's favor, McGrath racked up five kills as Bates finished the set and the match with a 6-2 run. It was McGrath's third career match with 20-plus kills and her second in a row, following her career-high of 22 against Southern Maine on Tuesday.
Bates played with outstanding offensive efficiency, with Naughton (Darien, Conn.) hitting at a .389 rate and Deneen at a .600 percentage.
