Field Hockey Opens NESCAC Season with 4-1 Win at Amherst

AMHERST, Massachsetts – Kimmy Ganong netted a pair of goals as the Bowdoin field hockey team captured its first NESCAC victory of the season in a 4-1 contest at Amherst on Saturday afternoon.
The third ranked Polar Bears (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) defeated 12th ranked Amherst (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) to open the conference schedule with a commanding offensive showing.

How It Happened
  • Nicole Barvieri scored her first collegiate goal with 11:48 remaining in the opening half, tipping in a Rachel Kennedy shot from the top left side of the circle.
  • Ganong doubled Bowdoin's lead with less than five minutes to play in the opening half as she tipped a shot by Kelsey Mullaney during one of seven Bowdoin penalty corners in the half.
  • Just over ten minutes into the second half, Kennedy successfully converted on a penalty stroke to put Bowdoin ahead 3-0.
  • Amherst answered two minutes later as Sara Culhane buried her fourth goal of the season.
  • Ganong stuffed in a rebound 17 minutes into the second half, her second of the game and the team's fourth, to end the day's scoring for both teams.
  • Bowdoin outshot Amherst 32-3, including 21 shots in the second half. The Polar Bears held a 12-4 edge in corners.
  • Emily Horowitz made 25 stops in net for the Jeffs

  • Bowdoin travels to Bates for a mid-week conference matchup on Tuesday evening. The Polar Bears and Bobcats face off at 7:00 p.m.
  • Amherst hosts Keene State on Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. start.
