Wachowiak Breaks SJC Career Kills Record‏

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College senior middle blocker Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) broke the Monks’ career kills record in a 3-0 victory at Husson University on Tuesday night.
Sitting on 1,100 kills and needing eight to surpass former teammate Sarah Hawkes ’13, Wachowiak broke the former mark (1,107) early in the second set with a kill off a Mariah Hebert (Biddeford, Maine) assist to lift the Monks to a 9-3 lead.

Wachowiak totaled 13 kills in the sweep over the Eagles and closed out the evening with 1,113 strikes over 376 career sets - 20 fewer than Hawkes played during her four seasons at Saint Joseph’s. Wachowiak also surpassed the mark in 293 fewer attempts than Hawkes, who remains as the only player in program history to notch 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

The three-time All-Conference honoree is the Monks’ career leader by a wide margin in block solos (253), block assists (145) and total blocks (398) and is closing in on the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) career total blocks mark (421), which is held by Amanda Dennis, a 2009 graduate of Pine Manor College.

Wachowiak is in the midst of her finest collegiate campaign, with GNAC-leading marks in kills per set (3.45), kills (176), hitting percentage (.368), blocks per set (1.14), solo blocks (39), total blocks (58), points (224.5) and points per set (4.4). For her efforts, she has collected six weekly honors already this fall, with three Offensive Player and three Defensive Player of the Week awards to her credit.

She also owns the SJC single-season records for attack percentage (.318, 2012), block solos (103, 2014), block assists (54, 2012), total blocks (141, 2014) and blocks per set (1.21) and is on pace to surpass several of the these marks this fall.

Adding to her impressive list of team records, the four-year starter has eclipsed multiple single-match marks as well, including attack percentage (.812), total blocks (13), block solos (10), block assists (8), four-set kills (24) and four-set points (28).

In her NCAA career, Wachowiak has claimed an astounding 26 accolades, including a pair of First Team All-GNAC awards, two ECAC DIII New England Player of the Week honors, and 15 GNAC weekly honors.

Saint Joseph’s (15-0, 3-0 GNAC), one of just three undefeated women’s volleyball programs in all of NCAA DIII, will travel to WPI for a 7:30 PM non-conference match on Friday evening.

PAXTON, Massachusetts – Saint Joseph’s College (6-5-0, 3-1-0 GNAC) blanked Anna Maria College (2-7-1, 0-3-1 GNAC), 4-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.
 

THE LEAD
The scoreless contest was interrupted in the 22nd minute as an AMCAT handball inside the box granted the Monks a penalty kick, which was buried by Desiree Parent (Westborough, Mass.) for the first score. The Monks added a second goal late in the first half to lead 2-0 at halftime and added two more scores in the second half to account for the 4-0 final.

Bowdoin Sweeps Colby in Non-Conference Wednesday Night Volleyball

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team rolled to its fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday down, sweeping Colby in a non-conference match at Morrell Gymnasium, 3-0.

The Polar Bears improve to 7-3 overall this season while the Mules drop to 7-5.

• Bowdoin controlled the first two sets, 25-9 and 25-14 before battling to a 28-26 win in the third to clinch the victory.
• Tied at 26 apiece in the third, Hayley Wahl sealed the win with consecutive services aces for the Polar Bears.

Thomas tabbed as ECAC Runner of the Week

DANBURY, Connecticut -- University of New England women's cross country runner Tiana Thomas has been named as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Runner of the Week for the period ending September 27.

It is the second time receiving the honor for Thomas, both following her selection as Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Runner of the Week.

The junior clocked a 5K time of 18:28 at the Pop Crowell Invitational to take the 1st-place spot in the 129-runner field by 31 seconds over teammate Emma Robidoux. The Nor'easters continued to dominate, as a squad, tallying their third victory in as many races of 2015 with a score of 18.

Arnold leads women’s soccer past USM

WATERVILLE, Maine — Laura Arnold (Dallas, Texas) played a part in all of Colby College’s goals in a 3-0 non-conference win over University of Southern Maine on Wednesday at Harold Alfond Stadium.

 

The game was moved from the Colby Soccer Field to Harold Alfond Stadium because of the heavy rain in the area. The rain decreased as the game wore on Wednesday.

 

Colby (3-3-1 overall) scored first at 5:03 of the opening half when Arnold kept the ball in play on the right end line and managed to push a pass back to about the penalty kick mark. Ally Ingraham (Morris Plains, N.J.) was streaking up the middle and nailed a high shot for the score.

 

The Huskies (3-5) managed to keep it a 1-0 game at halftime. The Mules had a 19-1 edge in shots, but 12 came after intermission.

 

Arnold scored her first goal of the game on a blast to the lower right corner of the goal. She was led perfectly on the play by a nice pass by Lauren McCarthy (Lynnfield, Mass.) at 50:58.

 

The Mules put the game away at 55:26 on Arnold’s fourth goal of the year. Katrina Holt (Seattle, Wash.) got some room on the right side and her centering pass was one-timed by Arnold. USM goalkeeper Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) pushed the hard shot into the crossbar, but the ball came directly back down and she was unable to keep it from going in the goal.

 

Ashley Conley (Dedham, Mass.) played 75:10 for Colby in goal and made one save. CC Pelletier (West Newfield, Maine) had the lone shot, but her hard shot was kicked away by Conley in the first half. Nora Hanson (San Francisco, Calif.) played the final 14:50 in goal for the Mules.

Temple was solid in goal for USM, stopping seven shots.

 

Colby has allowed just one goal in its last three games heading into Saturday’s contest at Middlebury College. Southern Maine heads to Plymouth State on Saturday.

Colby Shuts Out Southern Maine 3-0

WATERVILLE, Maine – Sophomore Laura Arnold (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill School) scored two goals and assisted on a third to lead the Colby College Mules to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's soccer game Wednesday afternoon.

The win is the second straight for the Mules improving their record to 3-3-1.  Southern Maine, having played five of its last six games on the road, drops its second straight game to fall to 3-5 on the season.

The Mules took an early 1-0 lead as sophomore Ally Ingraham (Morris Plains, N.J./Villa Walsh Academy) struck for a goal in the sixth minute.  Arnold who had the ball on the right end line centered the ball to Ingraham for the game-winner.  Despite Colby outshooting the Huskies 7-1 in the first half, the game remained 1-0 at the halftime break.

Colby wasted little time doubling its advantage in the second half as Arnold scored the first her two goals in a five-minute span.  Arnold made it 2-0 in the 51st minute when she ran onto a well-placed ball from senior Lauren McCarthy (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield).  Arnold then make it 3-0 in favor of the Mules, volleying in a cross from freshman Katrina Holt (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy) in the 56th minute. Arnold's second goal of the game was nearly saved by Huskies' senior goalkeeper Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) but the ball deflected off of the frame and bounced in for the goal.

Junior Ashley Conley (Walpole, Mass./Noble and Greenough) earned the shutout for Colby making one save in 75:10 of action.  Sophomore Nora Hanson (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) closed out the final 14:50 of the game for the Mules.  Hanson did not face a shot. Temple made seven saves for the Huskies in the loss.   Colby led USM 19-1 in shots (10-1 on goal).

Southern Maine remains on the road for its next contest when it faces Plymouth State in a Little East Conference game on Saturday (2:30 p.m.).  Colby travels to Middlebury for a NESCAC contest on Saturday (11:00 a.m.).

Beckles named assistant tennis coach

WATERVILLE, Maine — Lanell Beckles, former head tennis coach at Newbury College, is a new assistant coach for the Colby College tennis programs.

He was head coach at Newbury last year and served this summer as assistant director/teaching professional at the New England Golf & Tennis Camp in Belgrade, Maine.

Beckles, who has a bachelor’s degree from University of Arizona, works under new Colby head coach Jason Cohen.

Beckles had an internship with the United States Olympic Committee in 2007. He assisted the director of sports performance during training sessions and designed, organized, and implemented training programs for the archery and men’s field hockey teams.

From 2006 to 2008, he was a strength and conditioning coach and assistant track and field coach at American International College.

With a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) 2 certification, Beckles has worked extensively with youth programs in Arlington, Mass., and Hamilton, Mass. He also was a volunteer pro at the Harvard University Murr Center.

Volleyball earns New England Region ranking

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Colby College volleyball team, unbeaten at 3-0 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, is ranked 14th in the latest New England Women’s Volleyball Association Division III regional poll.

The Mules, under head coach Candice Parent, have been dominant in 3-0 wins against Trinity College, Wesleyan University, and Bates College.

 

The schedule gets tough over the next five matches. After a non-conference match tonight against a tough Bowdoin College squad, the Mules play four road matches against teams ranked ahead of them in the poll. Colby is at No. 2 Amherst on Friday and No. 5 Williams in a Saturday match. The Mules get the week off before heading to No. 8 Connecticut College next Friday and No. 3 Tufts on Saturday.

GORHAM, Maine – Due to inclement weather conditions the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's soccer game schedule to be played today against the UMaine Farmington Beavers has been postponed.


The game has been tentatively reschedule for Thursday, October 22.  Time has yet to be announced.  Southern Maine hosts Plymouth State on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) in its next contest.

Two schools from Maine win National Blue Ribbon recognition

Coastal Ridge Elementary School in York and Minot Consolidated School in RSU 16 were among 335 public and private schools across the country named 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools by U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan Tuesday.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students demonstrate high achievement learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. The award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content.

Each year, the Maine Department of Education is invited to nominate schools for this recognition.

NCAA W. SOCCER: Monks Topple Terriers, 8-1

WATERVILLE, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College (5-5-0, 2-1-0 GNAC) routed Thomas College (4-4-0, 1-0-0 NAC), 8-1, in a non-conference women’s soccer match on Monday night. Freshman forward Colleen Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) scored twice and added an assist in the lopsided victory, which was the Monks’ fourth in the last five games.

THE LEAD
Senior forward Hannah LeBlanc (Andover, Mass.) and freshman forward Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) both scored in the opening four minutes of play, but Thomas senior midfielder Bronte Howorth (Austin, Texas) cut the hosts’ deficit in half with her fifth goal of the season in the fifth minute. Sheehan answered the call, potting her two tallies – both off DaGraca passes - in the ensuing 20 minutes to put the Monks up 4-1 heading into intermission.

Saint Joseph’s padded the lead with four second-stanza markers, including a pair of Thomas own-goals, to walk away with the 8-1 triumph.

NOTABLES
Junior Desiree Parent (Westborough, Mass.) and sophomore Sarah Comtois (Lowell, Mass.) both scored in the second half for Saint Joseph’s. For Comtois, the goal – a free kick from the left that sailed beyond the outstretched hands of Terriers keeper Ashley Gooden (Lancaster, N.H.) – was her first of the season and second of her NCAA career.

THE KEEPERS
St. Joe’s senior goalkeeper Michelle Cunha (Enfield, Conn.) made three saves to pick up her second victory of the season.

The Terriers split time in net, with starter Paige Leary (Palermo, Maine) taking the loss after allowing four goals with 10 saves in the first half while Gooden tallied seven stops in the second frame.

TEAM TOTALS
Saint Joseph’s held advantages in both shots (30-9) and corner kicks (7-6) while Thomas was called for seven fouls opposed to four infractions charged to the Monks.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING
With the victory, Saint Joseph’s improves to 35-6 all-time versus Thomas College and has now defeated the Terriers in 20-consecutive meetings dating back to the 1997 season. In 41 meetings between the former conference rivals, the Monks have scored eight or more goals on three occasions. St. Joe’s defeated the Terriers by a 9-0 score on September 28th, 1994 and toppled Thomas, 8-0, on September 7th, 2008.

The Monks nipped the Terriers by a 1-0 margin in Standish last fall. The last time Saint Joseph’s scored at least eight goals: October 14th, 2012 in an 8-0 victory over Maine-Presque Isle.

Saint Joseph’s plays the first of eight-consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games when the team travels to Paxton, Massachusetts for a 4:00 PM match at Anna Maria College (2-6-1, 0-2-1 GNAC). WHITINGHAM, Vermont - Husson senior midfielder Britt Mellor has been named the North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Mellor tallied five points on the week as Husson earned a 7-2 win over Colby-Sawyer (N.H.). The Belfast, Maine, product scored two goals and tallied one assist to start the Eagles at 1-0 in conference action.

Mellor has a team-leading three goals and one assist this year.

The Mariners penned Morse in their defense third for much of the first half scoring at the 24 minute mark following a scrum off a corner kick.  The Shipbuilders were able to even the play towards the end of the half losing 1 - 0 at that point.

 

Morse came out strong and had Oceanside on their heals for most of the second half but couldn't break through the Mariner defense.  Oceanside took advantage of a mishandled shot with twelve minutes to go and again less than a minute later to put the outcome out of doubt.  Emma Rossetti, Mae Winglass, Hope Faulkingham, and Noa Sreden played well for Morse.

 

Next for Morse is Maranacook on Friday in Bath.

Forum Regarding Camden Hills Regional High School Footbal Scheduled

The Five Town CSD will be hosting a forum, Monday, October 5th at 7pm, to discuss a plan for moving forward with football at Camden Hills Regional High School. It will be held in the gym.

The discussions will be about the various options for our football team’s future for the next couple of years.

Options might include:

· Petitioning to play varsity next season,

· Playing at the junior varsity level

· Returning to an independent club sport

· Or other options.

Hosting the forum will be School Board chair Kristin Collins, Superintendent Maria Libby, Principal Nick Ithomitis, Athletic Director Steve Alex, and High School coach Thad Chilton. Also joining them will be Mike Burnham of the Maine Principal’s Association.

At the forum, they will not be discussing the decision that was made to forfeit the games, thus canceling the rest of the season. Field hockey game with Gordon pushed to Thursday

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Due to heavy rains and concerns regarding field conditions, the University of New England field hockey contest against Gordon College that had been scheduled for Wednesday (6 p.m.) has been postponed. The game will now occur on Thursday, October 1 with the same start time.

HS JV Football: Oceanside Holds Waterville At Bay September 28th

Rockland, Maine - In football action on Monday, September 28th, 2015 Oceanside jv football team kept Waterville at bay in Rockland, Maine. They won the football game by a score of 28-12.

Oceanside players that scored touchdowns in Monday's football game were Cooper Wirkala 2 Passing TD, Amos Anderson, a receiving TD, Ben Ripley, a receiving TD and Alex McLoughlin, a 61 Yard Kickoff Return TD. This was a great win for Oceanside as they won the game by 16 points.

The only Waterville player that was able to get a touchdown was #28. Waterville had a great night despite not winning.
