SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Thomas College
field hockey team was defeated 5-1 by Mount Holyoke College in a
non-conference contest. The Lyons were powered by a four-goal
performance from junior forward Charlotte Wagner.
Mount Holyoke opened the game's scoring in
the 17th minute as Wagner scored off a pass from Kristina Ramsden.
Wagner and Ramsden combined once again for the Lyons' second goal,
scoring on the left side in the 27th minute.
Mount Holyoke made it a 3-0 game just as
time expired in the first half as Sarah LaQuerre sent a shot in off a
penalty corner by Anna Hartman.
The second half saw the Lyons add to their
advantage in the 47th minute as Wagner lifted the Lyons to a 4-0 lead on
a pass from Julia Bell. Thomas broke past the Lyons' defense less than
a minute later as junior forward Gabby Martell found the ball in a heap of traffic in front and sent it through to the left. First year forward Sophany Srey was there, jamming it home to pull the visitors to within three (4-1).
Wagner would close out the game's scoring in
the 54th minute as she fired a shot that deflected off a defender's
stick and right back to her for her fourth tally of the game.
Mount Holyoke held the shot advantage over
the Terriers with a 21-6 margin (12-5 on goal). They also carried the
edge in penalty corners, 10-4.
For Thomas, junior captain Abbie Charrier had three stops in goal for the first half, while sophomore Jessica Russell made four saves in the final 35:00 of the game.
