UMaine Softball Offense Explodes for 19 Runs, Sweeps Doubleheader with UMass Lowell

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine softball team outscored visiting UMass Lowell by a combined score of 19-0 on Saturday, sweeping its doubleheader and taking the series from the River Hawks. Maine took game one by a score of 6-0 before routing the visitors 13-0 in game two.

Maine did not allow a run over the weekend and outhit the River Hawks by a 34-6 margin, including a season-best 17 hit showing in Saturday's finale. The Black Bears have now won four-straight and sit at 4-1 in America East action.

In each game, Maine was quick out of the gate as it outscored UMass Lowell a combined 17-0 in the
first two innings of each game. The Black Bears were paced by senior leader Janelle Bouchard who finished the day 4-for-7, including a double and a home run, to go along with three runs and three RBI. Rachel Harvey scored four runs and added three hits while Kristen Niland went 2-for-3 with five RBI in game two.

Not to be overshadowed by the the impressive offensive output was back-to-back shutouts by Maine starters Erin Bogdanovich and Annie Kennedy.

Bogdanovich picked up the win in game one after tossing a complete game shutout, surrendering just four hits and striking out three. Kennedy went the distance in the five-inning mercy-rule shutout, giving up a pair of hits with six strikeouts.

In game one, Felicia Lennon drove in three while Bouchard went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI to help lead the Black Bears to a 6-0 victory.

Maine put across five runs in the home half of the first inning. Erika Leonard started the rally as she was hit by a pitch before stealing both second and third and later scoring on an RBI single to left by Bouchard. Maine loaded the bases soon after and Lennon cleared them with a three-RBI double to center. The Black Bears added a run when Maddie Moore plated Lennon on a single.

Maine tacked on a run in the bottom of the second when Rachel Carlson came in to score on an error by the UMass Lowell shortstop.

Bogdanovich and the defense would shut the door the rest of the way to maintain a 6-0 win in game one.

The offense continued its rapid pace in game two as Maine belted out 17 hits and added 12 RBI en route to a 13-0 victory.

Seven Black Bears totaled two or more hits in the win. Niland finished 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a career-high five RBI while Bouchard homered, scored twice and drove in a pair.

Maine batted around in the first inning, plating six in the opening frame. Carlson's RBI double scored Leonard with the game's opening run before Maddie Decker's bases loaded walk brought home Alyssa Derrick. Niland followed by bouncing a double off the left field fence, clearing the bases to plate three more Maine runs. Sarah Coyne dropped an RBI single into right, bringing in Niland with Maine's sixth run of the inning.

The offense continued to produce with five more runs in the bottom of the second. Carlson led off the inning with a triple before scoring on Bouchard's two-run homer. Decker drove in her second of the game with an RBI single before Niland grounded out to short, allowing Lennon to score in the backdoor from third. Decker would score soon after when Coyne reached on an error, giving Maine an 11-0 lead.

Two more Maine runs would come across in the third, the first scoring when Harvey singled through the right side, plating Bouchard. Niland drove in her fifth, and Maine's 13th run, of the game with a single up the middle.

Kennedy was sharp over the final two innings as Maine would complete the three-game weekend sweep of the River Hawks with a 13-0 win.

Maine is back in action on Saturday, April 16 when it hosts Binghamton in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
