Eagles Rally to Sweep NAC Doubleheader from Lyndon State

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team used late inning rallies to sweep a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader from the Lyndon State College Hornets on Friday night at the Harold Alfond Diamond at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex. The Eagles won the first game 5-4 in eight innings before taking the nightcap 3-2.

Husson (9-9, 4-2 NAC) ends a one game losing streak while Lyndon State (3-11, 0-2 NAC) drops their third straight to Eagles and falls to 16-53 in the all-time series.

Lyndon State wasted no time to get on the scoreboard first, as the Hornets used a single, a stolen base and two fly outs to take a 1-0 edge in the top of the first. Andre Eason Jr. leadoff the inning with a single through the right side, stole second, advanced to third on a diving catch by leftfielder Cam Archer in foul territory off a fly ball by second baseman Reece Tanguay before scoring on a sacrifice fly to Archer by first baseman Devon Rollins.

The Hornets produced a one-run inning in the top of fourth to regain the lead on a RBI groundout to right fielder Andrew Curran by shortstop Ryan Cordeiro plating D. Rollins with the run. Lyndon State extended their lead to three runs in the top of fifth off an infield single by Eason, Jr. and a fielding error by second baseman Zach Sugar.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles took the advantage of a hit batsman, two hits, two solen bases and a Hornet miscue cutting the Lyndon State lead to one. Catcher Sam Huston who was plunked by an errant pitch leading off the inning would be eased on a fielder's choice by centerfielder Christian Corneil. Corneil stole second and third before scoring on a fielder's choice by Archer.
Archer would advance to second on a throwing error by starting pitcher Jeff Williams who was trying to pick him off at first before advancing to third on Curran's groundout to Tanguay and scored on shortstop Mike Wong's single to right center.

The Eagles tied the game up in the bottom of seventh when first baseman JT Whitten single down the left field line with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Manager Jason Harvey '06 decided to go to his bench for Conor Maguire to pinch run for Whitten.  A single by designated hitter Julien Boone advanced newly entered Maguire to third before Maguire scored on third baseman Ryan Rebar's RBI groundout to Tanguay.

Starting pitcher Brandon Reilly kept the game tied in the top of the eighth when he retired the Hornets in order setting up the walk-off win for Husson.

Huston leadoff the bottom half of the inning by reaching first on a throwing error by Cordeiro, leading Harvey to once again dip into his bench for a pinch runner. Newly entered pinch runner Alex Chapman advanced to second on a fielder interference by D. Rollins before closer Andrew Whalen plunked Corneil with the every next pitch giving the Eagles runners on first and second with no outs.
Archer advanced Chapman to third and Corneil to second on a sacrificed bunt, resulting in Lyndon State Skipper Tom White to intentionally walk Curran to load the bases with only one out.

With the Lyndon State infield in, Wong hit a groundball to third baseman Jake Jourdain who threw the ball to catcher Nate Stewart but Stewart drop the ball as Chapman slide cross the plate with the winning run.

For the Eagles, Whitten was 2-for-4 and Wong went 1-for-5 with two RBI while Curran, Boone, Sugar and Corneil accounted for the four other hits for Husson in the victory.  Reilly (3-1) picked up his third win of the season after allowing four runs (three earned) off five hits while walking two and fanning four over 8.0 innings of work.

For the Hornets, Eason, Jr. was 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI while D. Rollins, right fielder Aaron Catalani and Jourdain accounted for the three other Lyndon State hits in setback. Rollins and Cordeiro each added an RBI. Williams pitched 5.0 innings allowing three earned runs off three hits with three walks and two punch-outs. Zak Johnson pitched an inning allowing just two hits while Whalen (0-3) who blew the save and took the lost pitched 1.1 innings allowing two hits and two runs (one earned) with a walk.

The Eagles got the on the scoreboard first when Wong doubled down the leftfield line, advanced to third on a groundout by Whitten before scoring on a wild pitch as the Eagles lead 1-0 after one inning.

However, Lyndon State responded with a two-run rally in the top of the third when Tanguay notched a two-run single through the left side plating Jourdain and catcher David Laroche for a 2-1 lead.

Rebar tied the game in the bottom of the fourth off a RBI single to center field by Sugar before Wong scored the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Boone in the bottom of the sixth making the game 3-2.
Starting pitcher Dan Whitney would retire the Hornets in order in the top of the seventh for the victory.

For the Eagles, Wong went 2-for-3 with two runs and a two-bagger while Rebar added a two-bagger in the fourth and Sugar's single in fourth accounted for the other two Husson hits in the victory. Whitney (2-1) took the win after pitching a complete game four hitter while allowing two earned runs with four punch-outs.

For the Hornets, Tanguay was 1-for-3 with two RBI while Eason, Jr., Laroche and Jourdain accounted for the three other Lyndon State hits in the setback. Starting pitcher Davis Guyer (0-3) allowed three runs on four hits with a walk while fanning four over 6.0 innings  for the lost.

The Hornets and the Eagles are right back at it today for another NAC doubleheader at Harold Alfond Diamond at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
