Errors Haunt Sea Dogs in 11-7 Loss

Rodriguez Hits 9th Home Run, Brentz 4-5

Portland, Maine - The weather was beautiful at Hadlock Field; the baseball was not as the Portland Sea Dogs committed four errors falling to the Binghamton Mets 11-7 before a crowd of 6,474.  Binghamton took two out of three games from the Sea Dogs.

The Mets scored early and often plating runs in every inning with the exception of the seventh.  Binghamton collected 12 hits and were aided by four Portland errors and seven walks as the Mets scored three unearned runs.

The errors started early for the Sea Dogs, Matt Den Dekker led-off the game with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Kolbrin Vitek.  Den Dekker would score on a Reese Havens ground out to the Mets a quick 1-0 lead.

A throwing error by Portland starter Chris Balcom-Miller on a pick-off attempt in the second inning would eventually lead to two more runs.  Juan Lagares scored on a wild pitch from third base and Eric Campbell scored on a Pedro Zapata sacrifice fly.

Balcom-Miller (2-4) struggled with his command walking five batters and allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits in four innings of work.

Jeremy Hazelbaker, belted his second home run of the season in the third inning off Greg Peavey to make it 3-1 Binghamton.

Den Dekker and Lagares would lead the Binghamton offensive attack, each collecting three hits.  Pedro Zapata reached base three times, 1-for-1 with two walks, and scored three times.  The Mets big inning came in the sixth when Sean Kazmar hit a two run double.  Havens would reach on an error by first basemen Reynaldo Rodriguez which allowed Kazmar to score.

Down 9-3 in the seventh the Sea Dogs rallied for four runs to make the game interesting.  Rodriguez smashed his second home run in as many days, a three run shot to highlight the inning.  The home run was his team leading ninth, which ranks second in the league.

The Mets responded right back with a run in the eighth and Jefry Marte hit his third home run of the season in the ninth off Brock Huntzinger to complete the scoring.

Peavey (3-1) earned the win hurling five innings allowing three runs on eight hits.

Bryce Brentz went 4-for-5 for the Sea Dogs raising his average to .302 on the season.  He is hitting .426 in the month of May.

The Sea Dogs travel to New Hampshire for a four game series against the Fisher Cats kicking off with a 7:05 PM contest on Monday evening.  Red Sox top pitching prospect Anthony Ranaudo (0-0, 9.00) is scheduled to make his second Double-A start.  He will be opposed by Fisher Cats lefty Brett Cecil (1-2, 5.06).  The Sea Dogs will return to Hadlock Field on Friday, May 25th at 6:00 PM against the New Britain Rock Cats.  Tickets are available for all 2012 Sea Dogs home games and can be purchased by calling the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-879-9500 or online at www.seadogs.com.
