On May 24, Foxcroft Academy Physics CPA and Principles of Technology students took to the the Piscataquis River for the annual "Cardboard Floats" boat race wearing lifejackets and riding in the fruit of their efforts. The process began in February with research on topics ranging from buoyancy to boat design, waterproofing to paddling techniques. After completing the necessary research, students began building their boats. For Physics CPA students the boat had to be built with cardboard and a small amount of wood. The boats were then sealed together with caulk, tape, and paint. Principles of Technology students were allowed to use any amount of wood and cardboard, and any other environmentally-friendly material. Principles of Technology also had to construct their own oars. Lastly, the final product for all students had to be at least 30% submerged and stay afloat for the final race.
On the day of the race 35 boats of various colors and designs lined the banks of the river, their riders excited and nervous to see if the months they had taken to research and build would pay off. One by one the boats took to the water, with several timers recording and a fleet of kayaks there to help struggling paddlers. Donnie Boyer '13 and his rider Zach Evans '12 finished first out of Physics CPA students with a blistering time of 1:16.18. Monica Miles '13 and Alex Stevens '13 finished in a close second with a time of 1:24.53. Alex Sedore '13 and Lydia Zepeda '13 rounded out the top three in Physics CPA at 1:43.50. Among Principles of Technology students, Tony Moulton '12 and rider Robbie Neeb '12 placed first with a time of 2:36.78. Trailing by half a minute, Jean-Marc Nosbusch '12 and Nate Bouley '12 crossed the finish line with a time of 3:09.72. Alison Ryder '13 and her rider Logan Masse '13 rounded out the top three with a time of 3:26.85.
