Central Maine Medical Center Collaborates with Massachusetts General Hospital for Trauma Care


Lewiston, Maine - CMMC has had a superior trauma program since 1994, serving the entire central and western Maine region with care of exceptional quality and reliability. CMMC’sleadership proudly announces an agreement with the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) to even further improve CMMC’s trauma and emergency surgery services.

“We are very excited about developing a collegial, interactive professional relationship with the world-renowned MGH medical staff,” said Dr. Larry Hopperstead, CMMC’s Trauma Program Founder and Acting Director.  “Our patients will have access to the highest quality of specialized quaternary care for those few patients who are in need of such services.”

George Velmahos, M.D., Chief, MGH Division of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, will serve as CMMC’s Acute Care Surgery Program Director.   Dr. Velmahos, an internationally recognized authority on trauma and surgical critical care, will oversee program development, quality improvement, educational programs and physician recruitment at CMMC.

CMMC and MGH will also jointly recruit an experienced trauma and emergency surgery surgeon to serve as the Director for the trauma and acute care surgery program at CMMC.  This surgeon, while living and practicing locally, will have joint medical staff privileges at CMMC and MGH, and will be eligible for a teaching appointment at Harvard Medical School.    

“We will benefit from ongoing educational and professional-growth opportunities for Trauma Surgeons, Critical Care Specialists, Anesthesiologists, and other specialists,” said CMMC President Laird Covey.  “MGH will provide invaluable assistance in recruiting exceptional physicians and providing ongoing quality and educational oversight.  I believe our Trauma Program will be stronger in the future as a result of this leadership.”
