Bar Harbor, Maine -- Eight students from Mount Desert Island Regional High School will complete their academic-year internships at The Jackson Laboratory with presentations of their research on Thursday, May 24 at 3 p.m. The symposium is free and open to the public and the news media.
Since September 2011 the students have been conductingresearch under the mentorship of a Jackson faculty scientist in cancer, neurobiology, aging and other areas:
Joseph Kief: Glaucoma
Aaron Krevans: Cancer
Mia Musetti: Neurobiology
Makayla Parsons: Aging
Adam Perruzzi: Computational biology
Yina Sun: Neurobiology
Liam Torrey: Immunology
Ning Ye: Cancer
“These students have experienced science in a way that’s just not possible in a high school classroom,” says Lisa John, Jackson’s educational programs manager. “This experience will be invaluable as they start their college careers. We hope that more Downeast region students will apply for academic-year internships for the 2012-13 term.”
Dr. Randy Smith, director of educational programs at the Laboratory, notes that this is the last year of a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute that has supported high school internships for the last 10 years. “We are actively working on new funding, and we will continue providing students with the opportunity to conduct research with our faculty,” Smith says.
