Sat. June 2 is National Trails Day. Meet at the Bearce-Allen Preserve parking area at 9:00 a.m. for amorning of trail cleanup. Please bring a bow saw or loppers; those proficient with chainsaws are asked to bring one. Tick and fly preventative measures are recommended. RSVP totrails@pemaquidwatershed.org. DIRECTIONS: From Damariscotta, take the Bristol Road (Route 130) 7.1 miles to Sproul Hill Rd. Make a left on to Sproul Hill Rd and travel 0.2 miles; then turn right on to Austin Road. The preserve and trail head are on the left, with a small pullout for parking on the right.
Wed. June 6: PWA leads the Wednesday Walkers. Enjoy a stroll with the Wednesday Walkers at Doyle Preserve in Damariscotta. PWA’s AmeriCorps Member, Amelia Fogg, will lead walkers around Doyle Preserve’s easy two-mile loop through lush woodland to the shore of beautiful Pemaquid Pond. The gently rolling terrain is fun to walk and provides a peaceful getaway just minutes from downtown Damariscotta. The walk will start at 9:00 a.m., and everyone is welcome. Due to limited parking at the preserve, walkers are asked to meet at the Friends’ Meeting House (77 Belvedere Road, just off Route 1 in Damariscotta) at 8:30 a.m. to carpool to the site. OR, if you coming from the Rockland area, a carpool will meet at Lowes in Thomaston at 8:00 a.m. For those who opt not to carpool, they may meet the group at the preserve’s parking area at 9:00 a.m. To reach the Doyle Preserve from Damariscotta, take Biscay Road two miles and turn left onto Egypt Road. Travel 1.7 miles and turn right onto Castaway Cove Road. Preserve parking area is 0.1 miles down the road on the right.

Tues. June 5: 9:00 a.m. – noon. Planning for a Good Timber Harvest. Do you need pointers on how to manage your woodlot? Morten Moesswilde, District Forester with the Maine Forest Service, will lead this workshop to outline the steps in planning for timber harvests, such as: developing long-range forest management plans, hiring foresters, primary considerations for harvest operations, finding a logger, and contracts. “On the ground” aspects of harvest planning will be discussed during a woods walk. Hosted by Steve and Jo Laurich in Bremen. Co-organized by PWA and Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District Space is limited. June 8: Pemaquid Watershed Association’s 8th Annual Party on the Pier at The Contented Sole restaurant, Pemaquid Harbor, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Harbor putts, live music, silent and live auctions, signature hors d’oeuvres, dinner sampling, delightful desserts, and cash bar. Reserve your tickets early and sign up for a 15-minute “Harbor Putt” tour of Pemaquid Harbor courtesy of Russ Benjamin of Pemaquid Ocean Tours (available on a first-come, first served sign-up basis). Live music by Dam Jam Fiddlers & Co. Party tickets are $25 each; to get tickets, call 563-2196 or stop in at PWA’s office above Salt Bay Café, Damariscotta, or at the Maine Coast Book Shop. - For those unable to attend the party, there will be an opportunity to bid on the auction items remotely via email and in-person at Skidompha Library. Now through June 2, several of the auction items will be on display at the library with bid sheets. Starting on May 29, a list of the silent and live auction items will be posted at www.pemaquidwatershed.org/PotP.html. You will also get the list emailed to you. To place an online bid, the bidder can email PWA with their highest bids, and at the end of each day the high bid for each item will be posted on the web site. This email bidding process will take place up until 9:00 p.m. on June 7, and the highest bid will be used as the starting bid on the evening of the party. High bidders who had placed their bids at the library or online will be notified the week after the party. Cash, check, and credit cards are accepted.

Sun. June 17, 1:00 -4:00 p.m.: Kayak Safety Skills Session, Biscay Beach. PWA is hosting a skills-building session with American Canoe Association-certified instructor Matt Lutkus for anyone looking to gain confidence on the water and learn safety skills. Topics will include how to properly assess water conditions, how to safely exit and enter a kayak, wet exits, self rescues, and assisted rescues. This clinic will include a dry-land presentation and on-water practice sessions. The clinic is open to public; beginner kayakers welcome. Participants must provide their own one-person kayak and spray skirt and come prepared with a wetsuit, as they will spend time in the water. Tues. June 19, 2:00-8:00 p.m.: Intro Invasive Plants workshop. Indoor-based plant identification and description of invasive aquatic surveying techniques. There will be a ½-hour break, snacks provided. The primary goal of this comprehensive, 5.5-hour workshop is to provide those who wish to join Maine's "early detection" effort with information and guidance needed to get started. The training session is open to the public and FREE to anyone interested in learning more about the threat of invasive aquatic plants in Maine.
The workshop is presented in four parts:
• Overview of invasive species issues in Maine and beyond
• Plant identification fundamentals
• Plant identification hands-on exercise with live plants
• Conducting a screening survey, tools and techniques
All workshop participants receive an “Invasive Plant Patroller’s Handbook,” and Maine's Field Guide to Invasive Aquatic Plants. Wed. June 27: Worms are Back! Jock Robie, an amateur vermiculture enthusiast, will hold a worm bin presentation and open house at the Bremen Town House. From 3:00 to 6:30, Robie will hold an open house for anyone who already has a worm bin and would like a private consultation on their bin or help harvesting their castings. Participants can schedule a 40 minute appointment by calling PWA at 563-2196 or can drop in. From 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Robie will give a presentation on Vermiculture 101 – including advice on how to start your own worm bin. This presentation is free and open to the public. The first 20 participants to register will receive a free worm bin, worms not included. To register, call PWA at 563-2196.
Sat. June 30: Third Annual PWA Puffin Sunset Cruise from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. with Hardy Boat Cruises. Sailing out of New Harbor to Eastern Egg Rock, we’ll circle the island for great views of puffins, terns and other seabirds. A pass by the lighthouse at Pemaquid Point at sunset will combine birding with a lovely summer evening on the Maine coast. Cash bar; Complimentary desserts provided by Damariscotta River Grill. Tickets are $30 each. Bring binoculars for best puffin viewing. We will meet at 6:15 at Shaw’s Wharf. All vehicles must park in ball field. Parking fee of $3.00 per vehicle. Sat. June 2, 10 a.m. - Weskeag (Gig) River, Thomaston - Directions: Take Rte 1 North to Thomaston. Proceed through town to 2nd traffic light at bottom of small downgrade. Turn right on Rte 131 going past Montpellier mansion on left. Proceed several miles passing RR tracks and “Hoggy’s” gas station on right. Shortly thereafter turn left onto Westbrook Rd and follow it for 1.9 miles to a “T” intersection with Rte 73. Go left across the bridge with the put-in on right. Porta-potty available; duration 2½ hrs; optional lunch at a local restaurant.
Sat. June 9, 10 a.m. - Boothbay/Indiantown, Powderhorn, Spectacle Island Area – Advisory: ocean paddling. Directions: Take Rte 27 from Rte 1 toward Boothbay for 9.6 miles to the monument in Boothbay. Bear right at the monument onto Barter’s Island Rd for 1.75 miles and then a left over the bridge to the Knickercane boat launch on the right. Public restroom; duration 3 hrs; optional lunch at the Trevett Country Store.
Sat. June 16, 10 a.m. - East Boothbay/Linekin Bay to Cabbage and Negro Islands - Advisory: ocean paddling. Directions: Take Rte 27 south from Rte 1 toward Boothbay/Boothbay Harbor for ~11 miles to route 96 (Ocean Point Rd) on your left. Follow Rte 96 for ~2½ miles taking a right turn just past the grocery market on your right onto Murray Hill Rd. The put-in is a short distance down the road on the left; no public restroom; duration 3 hrs; optional lunch at the Lobsterman’s Wharf restaurant.
Sat. June 23, 10 a.m. - St. George River, Thomaston to Oyster River - Directions: Take Rte 1 North to traffic light in Thomaston turning right on Knox St and proceed to end (just across railroad tracks) to 90-degree right turn and look immediately for harbor entrance on left. Park on right by grassy area which is the put-in area. Public restroom available; duration 2½ hrs; picnic lunch (bring your own) at private home on Oyster River.
Sat. June 30, 10 a.m. – Five Islands, Georgetown Island or Cozy Harbor area, Southport, depending on the sea condition. Advisory: ocean paddling. Directions: From Damariscotta take Rte 1 South to Rte 27 on your left in North Edgecomb. Follow Rte 27 through Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor into Southport over the bridge. Turn right off Rte 27 after the fire house and between the monument and the general store. After the store, fork left onto Shore Rd and proceed half a mile to the Lighthouse Beach where there is parking and where we will put-in. The duration of the paddle will be 2½ to 3 hrs with optional lunch at the general store or a new lunch place at Cozy Harbor; porta-potty at general store but no facilities at beach.
