Augusta, Maine - First Lady Ann LePage will be introducing Former First Lady Barbara Bush on Friday, May 25, 2012 at the Barbara Bush Foundation’s Maine Family Literacy Initiative awards ceremony. The event will take place at the University of New England, at the Bush Center, and will begin at 10:30 am.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to introduce Former First Lady Barbara Bush and thank her for her generosity and support of family literacy in our great State of Maine,” said First Lady Ann LePage. “It is wonderful to be able to participate in the event and to congratulate each of the Grand Award winners. I very much look forward to hearing about how this funding will benefit their current and future programs,” added Mrs. LePage

Maine Literacy Initiative funds support parents and children by encouraging them to make reading and writing a family activity by doing these activities together on a regular basis. Since 1996, 243 family literacy grants have been awarded totaling $4,341,991.

There are 3 types of grants offered which include: $5,000 Planning Grant for exploring community needs, $25,000 Family Literacy Program Grant allowing Maine communities to provide services designed to meet the needs of local families, and a $25,000 Lighthouse Model Program Grant to conduct outreach to potential applicants. Maine Literacy Initiative funds have made a notable difference in the lives many Maine parents, as well as many of our children.
