Rockland, Maine - High school juniors and seniors in Maine are eligible to take a university course at University College at Rockland tuition free. This spring 46 local high school students were enrolled at URock taking courses such as College Writing, Public Speaking, Introduction to Psychology, Statistics, Computer Science and more.

According to URock Director, Deborah Meehan, now is the time for high school students who will be juniors and seniors next year to plan with their guidance counselors about university courses for the fall term.
"It's best to get the plan in place before public school lets out for the summer," added Meehan.

All students who enroll need current SAT scores, or URock administers a placement test to be sure high school students are placed correctly. "We want this to work well," said Meehan, noting the courses count for both high school and college credit.

Meehan added that having college credit on a high school transcript shows colleges that students are capable of doing college level work. "It can be a positive boost to a student's admission application," she noted.

Although High School Aspiration students must buy the required text for the course, they pay no tuition or fees. Meehan said these students are treated just like all university students with the same course requirements and expectations.
