Children's Garden Club Returns to Merryspring

Children's Garden Club Returns to Merryspring

Rockport, Maine - It’s that time of year again. The days are getting longer, the sun is getting warmer, and the plants are getting taller. Merryspring Nature Center is proud to announce the return of its Children’s Garden Club. Starting July 11, Children’s gardening classes will run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays throughout the summer.

Kids will learn all aspects of gardening through hands-on learning. In addition to caring for the garden, kids will learn all about the important ingredients of a healthy garden, participate in fun gardening games, and create crafts to take home. Children of all ages are welcome, but the program and concepts are best suited for ages 7-13.

Classes and subjects are as follows:

July 11 - Seeds- Help plant seeds in the Children’s Garden. Find out how even the biggest plants start from tiny seeds. Learn all about seed adaptations and adopt a seed buddy to take home!

July 18 - Soils & Compost- Get the dirt on soil! Learn about soil structure and nutrients and go on a soil safari.

July 25 - Water & Watersheds- H2O-yeah! Water is the most important ingredient for a healthy garden AND healthy people! Find out about the water cycle and just why water is so necessary.

Aug 8th- Plant Parts & Senses- Not just leaves and flowers! All parts of plants are important. Discover all the different uses we have for different parts of a plant as well as the different roles they play.

Aug 15 - Garden Critters- What’s that creeping in the garden? Get a bug’s-eye-view of the world and learn the difference between helpful critters and pesky pests. Create your own garden critter!

Aug 22 - Three Sisters & the Wild Garden- Corns, Beans, and Squash have an ancient partnership. See how these three crops depend on each other and learn some three sisters mythology. Come explore plants outside the plot and learn about the garden growing all around you.

Aug 29 - Harvest Day- You’ve got to reap what you sow! Help with the harvest of this year’s crops, play garden games, and celebrate the end of a successful season!

Participation is free for all children! However, Garden Club classes are limited to 15 students. Pre-registration is required for ALL participants and sign-ups for any or all sessions begin June 20. To sign up, please call 236-2239 or email info@merryspring.org.
