Shorebird Quest for Families

Rockland, Maine – Georges River Land Trust will host a family event in Thomaston on the Village Trail from 10:00 am to noon on Saturday, June 9th.  Families are invited to meet at the north end of the Strong Agency parking lot on Main Street, next to the Thomaston Town Green for an exploration along Thomaston’s waterfront.

Participants will follow the Shorebird Quest created by the local fourth graders at Lura Libby School. It is a self-guided interpretative walk, highlighting the myriad shorebirds that use our river.  The Quest takes participants along the Thomaston Village Trail, a section of the Georges Highland Path, starting at the Village Green overlooking the St. George River and finishing at the Town’s Public Landing.

The Muscongus Bay Project of Quebec Labrador Foundation operated this place-based education program from2009-2011, and with the help of a grant from the Maine Community Foundation Georges River Land Trust is now stewarding four Quests throughout the watershed.  Commonly written in rhyming verse, a Quest contains movement clues and a map to get you from one place to the next, while learning about natural resources and local history. Quests always end with the discovery of a “treasure” box that has a Quest stamp and log book.  Questing is an effective way to encourage families and/or school groups to explore and use places in a way that would inspire learning and interest about the natural world and its history.

Georges River Land Trust along with the other midcoast organizations (Medomak Valley Land Trust, Chewonki Foundation, Damariscotta River Association, Hardy Boat Tours and Warren Public Library) is working to encourage Quest use overall and help diversify the availability of outdoor recreational activities in Knox and Lincoln Counties. This summer explore the region by going on a Quest in the Georges River watershed and throughout the midcoast. Quest information can be found at www.grlt.org/quest.

Georges River Land Trust is committed to encouraging citizens to discover the river and care for the land throughout the 14 communities in the St. George River watershed.
