Buckner, Sea Dogs Shutout Binghamton

Portland, Maine - Billy Buckner and two relievers held the Binghamton Mets to four hits as the Portland Sea Dogs shutout the Mets 4-0 Friday night before a crowd of 6,563 fans at Hadlock Field.  Portland (15-25) has now won three straight home games and eight of their last 13 games.

Buckner (2-3) tossed six shutout innings allowing three hits while walking three and striking out three to earn his second win of the season.  Buckner was effective tossing 96 pitches, 56 for strikes.  Buckner worked out of a jam in the fifth after allowing consecutive singles to lead-off the inning.   Buckner was also aided by two great diving catches by centerfielder Ronald Bermudez.

Aaron Kurcz tossed two shutout innings in relief allowing one hit.  Kurcz entered the night leading all Eastern League relievers in strikeouts -per-nine innings pitched (13.92), notched three punch-outs.

Josh Fields struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the shutout.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a grounder inside the third base bag off Gonzalez Germen (1-2) for a two run double scoring Ronald Bermudez and Derrick Gibson to give the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead.

The Sea Dogs extended the lead in the seventh when Kolbrin Vitek hit a wall-ball single off the Maine Monster and scored on a Juan Carlos Linares double off the left-field wall.  Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a fly ball that center fielder Matt Den Dekker lost in the lights.  Linares scored and Rodriguez wound-up with a triple.

The two teams will meet again Saturday at 1:00 PM at Hadlock Field.  The Sea Dogs have not yet named a starter.  Right-handed pitcher Jenrry Mejia (0-0, 0.00) will get the start for Binghamton.  Mejia who has 33 games of Major League experience with a 0-4 record and a 4.62 is working his way back after Tommy John surgery.  Tickets are available and can be purchased by calling the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-879-9500 or order online at www.seadogs.com.
