UMaine Baseball Falls to NYIT in Friday's Doubleheader

ORONO, Maine -- Maine Baseball (5-22) falls to NYIT (13-15) in Friday's doubleheader, 9-4 in the first game and 4-2 in game two at Mahaney Diamond.

In game one of the doubleheader, Chris Murphy received the start on the mound for the Black Bears and Matt Diaz received the start for NYIT.

Louis Mele hit a three run home run in the top of the fifth to score the first runs of the game and give NYIT a 3-0 lead.

Muphy finished the day with ten strikeouts in six innings pitched and allowed three hits.

Joe Daru homered to right center in the top of the seventh, a two run home run increasing their lead,
5-0. Frank Sanacore later singled through the left side of the infield driving in one run and NYIT took a 6-0 advantage.

In bottom half of the inning, Kevin Stypulkowski homered to right field driving in Danny Casals cutting into the NYIT lead, 6-2. Colin Ridley also went yard, a solo home run cutting NYIT's lead in half, 6-3.

NYIT hit their third home run of the game, Jake Lebel homered to right field, a solo shot increasing their lead to 7-3. Louis Mele later singled to center field driving in one bringing the score to 8-3.

In the top of the ninth, Jake Lebel singled to left field driving in one more and taking a 9-3 advantage.

The Black Bears tallied one run in the bottom of the ninth, Brenden Geary singled through the right side scoring Colin Ridley.

Matt Diaz received the win, he pitched five innings allowing seven hits and striking out seven.

In game two, John Arel started for Maine and Elias Martinez started for NYIT.
This was the second straight game that the Black Bears' starting pitcher had ten strikeouts.

The Black Bears opened with the opening run of the game, Kevin Stypulkowski singled through the left side driving in two runs and taking a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Frank Sanacore singled to short driving in one run and cutting the Black Bear lead to one, 2-1.

Connor Johnson came on in the seventh for the save opportunity. NYIT rallied and scored three runs in the seventh after Joe Daru singled to left field scoring one and tying the game at 2-2. Anthony Cardonna singled up the middle and also scored one giving NYIT the lead, 3-2. Then, Frank Sanacore also singled up the middle and taking a 4-2 lead.

Maine was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, dropping the second game of the doubleheader.

Elias Martinez received the win and Connor Johnson got the loss.

Maine returns to action tomorrow for another doubleheader against NYIT, game one begins at 1:00 p.m.
