Thunder Blast Two Homers in the Ninth to Win
Vitek hits first career Double-A home run
Portland, Maine - The Trenton Thunder blasted two home runs and scored three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 6-3 Monday night at Hadlock Field. The Thunder improved to 11-12 on the season. While Portland finished the month of April with a7-18 record.
With the game tied at three in the ninth Ronnier Mustelier connected for a two run homer off Eammon Portice (0-1). After retiring Cody Johnson, Melky Mesa also deposited a Portice offering over the fence, his fifth of the season.
Kelvin Perez shutdown the Sea Dogs in the bottom half of the ninth to earn his first save of the season. Francisco Rondon (1-0) earned the win for Trenton.
Kolbrin Vitek was the offensive standout for the Sea Dogs with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI including his first Double-A home run in the eighth inning.
Trenton struck first when Cody Johnson delivered a RBI single to center in the first inning scoring Abraham Almonte.
Oscar Tejeda tied the game in the fourth with a RBI double off the Maine Monster scoring Juan Carlos Linares.
The two teams would each score a run in the fifth inning. Trenton scored on an infield RBI single off the bat of Luke Murton. While Vitek added a RBI single to right for Portland to keep the scored tied.
The Yankees affiliate broke the two-two tie when Addison Maruszak scored on Mustelier ground out making it 3-2 Trenton.
Vitek tied the game at three in the eighth with a home run off Ryan Pope.
The series will continue Tuesday night at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs will send right-handed pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller (1-2, 6.86) to the mound. He will be opposed by Trenton righty Craig Heyer (1-2, 4.57). New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung will be appearing at the game and will sign free autographs on photos provided by the Sea Dogs from 6:00 to 7:00 PM in the Portland Room.
