Sea Dogs Get Walk Off Win Over Trenton
Drew Hedman Goes 2-for-4 with game winning blast
Portland, Maine - Drew Hedman played the hero for the Portland Sea Dogs with a game winning home run in the bottom of the 9th inning into the Sea Dogs bullpen. The home run was Hedman's first as a Sea Dog and gave Portland a 4-3 win over the Trenton Thunder before a sellout crowd of 7,368 fans at Hadlock Field.
Before Hedman's heroics the Sea Dogs trailed the Thunder 3-0 late but Portland came up big in the eighth. The first two hitters of the inning for the Sea Dogs, Drew Hedman and Ryan Dent, singled and Jackie Bradley Jr. walked to load the bases with no one out. Jeremy Hazelbaker cleared the bases with a game-tying double evening the score at three picking up three RBI on the play. Hazelbaker has 7 RBI over the past two games.
Both teams received solid pitching from their starters. Sea Dogs' Chris Hernandez (4-6, 2.82) and Trenton's Dellin Betances (0-0, 0.00) stole the show Saturday night through the first five innings.
Betances, a member of the Yankees 40-man roster, started for Trenton after being transferred from Triple-A Scranton. His struggles with the Scranton Yankees (3-5, 6.39) did not carry over to his outing for Trenton on Saturday.
Betances threw six shutout innings for Trenton giving up just three hits while striking out five. He tossed 91 pitches, 55 for strikes and walked three.
Hernandez came away with a no decision but saw his ERA drop from 2.87 to 2.82. He was lifted after pitching five innings in favor of Chorye Spoone. Hernandez gave up a first inning home run to Addison Marusza but settled down giving the Dogs four consecutive shutout innings after the first. The lefty struck out three, walked two and gave up two run on six hits. He also walked two and struck out three.
The two heroes of the game, Hazelbaker and Hedman, both went 2-for-4 on the night.
