Forts Along the Kennebec
When & Where:
An educational
program offered by Old Fort Western in conjunction with the Pownalborough
Courthouse and Lincoln County Historical Society. This program will be offered August 8, 9 and
10, 2012 from 8:00am to 3:00pm at various fort sites along the Kennebec River.
Program Description: The group will be mustered into service to the King and experience life as
a soldier in the Crown Forces during the French and Indian War. As a part of the program, we will visit the
sites of Fort Halifax, Fort Western, Fort Richmond and Fort Shirley (which is
now the site of the Pownalborough Courthouse).
At Fort Shirley, as a part of Samuel Goodwin’s Company, there will be a
scouting expedition through the ‘wilderness’.
On Saturday, August 11, there will be an opportunity to visit an
encampment at Old Fort Western.
Instructors:
Peter Morrissey
and Rebecca “Reb” Manthey, two reenactors from Samuel Goodwin’s Company, who
are also Historic Interpreters at Old Fort Western, will guide the group
through three days of living history related to the Fortifications of the
French and Indian War period. All three
days, there will be an emphasis on the soldiering that went on in Maine during
that era.
