Camden/Rockport, Maine - Forest entomologist Allison Konati will lead a lecture about invasive threats to Eastern Hemlock trees in Maine at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, July 31 at 12:00 noon.
Two insects, the hemlock wooly adelgid and elongate hemlock scale, have arrived and started affecting Maine’s coastal hemlock forests. Konati’s presentation will cover the natural history of these insects, how they got to Maine, and methods being used to control their populations. In addition to identifying these irksome invaders, Konati will teach guests how to monitor and report findings of the pests.
Kanoti is a forest entomologist with the Maine Forest Service. Her responsibilities include administering quarantines on pests and plants that threaten Maine, administering survey programs for insect pests, and responding to inquiries from the public regarding forest and shade tree health. Allison holds a BS in Forest Biology from the University of Vermont and an MS in Forestry from the University of Maine, where she completed her thesis work on balsam woolly adelgid.
This presentation is part of the Summer Talk Series at Merryspring, which is being co-sponsored by Camden National Bank and Jaret & Cohn Real Estate.
Admission to the Tuesday Talks is free to Merryspring members and children, with a nominal $5 fee for non-members.
