Owls Head, Maine - Classic cars, antique airplanes highlight the action at the Owls Head Transportation Museums Spring Auto & Antique Aeroplane Show, May 26 & 27. Owners of pre-1992 cars, trucks and motorcycles—of any make or model—are welcome to exhibit their vehicles on the Museum’s Runway 17. Exhibitors and a guest get in free.
Additionally, in recognition of Chevrolet's 100th anniversary, the Museum and event sponsor Fuller Chevrolet-GMC of Rockland are inviting all 2012 Chevrolet owners to exhibit their vehicles free was well. A special parking area will be set aside for new vehicles.
“What better weekend than Memorial Day to salute this iconic American brand,” said Executive Director Charles Chiarchiaro. “If you own an antique, classic or special interest vehicle—or you simply enjoy seeing them up close—this show is for you. We are expecting a great turnout, with vehicles from all over the state and beyond. It’s a great way to start the rally season.”
In addition to a large number of exhibitor vehicles, several of the Museum's antique automobiles will be on display on Runway 17 including its 1932 Chevrolet Confederate Roadster and 1953 Chevrolet Corvette. Sponsor Fuller Chevrolet-GMC <http://www.fullerautomall.net/> will display some 2012 vehicles including the new electric Chevrolet Volt.
Clubs are always welcome and encouraged to contact the museum in advance to arrange group parking. One of the first motorcycle rides of the year, ‘Elaine's Hope - 1st Annual Motorcycle Ride for a Cure for Cancer’ will be joining the festivities on Saturday, May 26, (with a rain date of Sunday). They will ride in from & return to Richmond ME and are raising funds for the American Cancer Society. The Museum will also set aside an area for children to exhibit their “wheels” (i.e. bicycles, tricycles, scooters, etc.) near its popular “Kids Corral” pedal car area. All children under 18 get in free.
As always the Museum will actively demonstrate a few of its turn-of-the-century automobiles as well as give free rides in Ford Model Ts. Special children’s activities — including our popular styrofoam airplane-building workshop—and Museum tours are planned. There will be plenty of fun for the whole family.
The antique aeroplane show will begin at 9:30 a.m., weather permitting. Aircraft conservator Karl Erickson and a team of volunteers have been working tirelessly on getting the Museum’s fleet of World War I-era biplanes ready to take to the skies. Back on the flight line will be the 1917 Curtiss JN-4 or “Jenny” made popular by barnstormers of the 1920s. Also seeing action will be the 1917 Nieuport 28C.1, 1916 Sopwith Pup and of course, the 1917 Fokker DR.I triplane (aka the Red Baron) among others. An open flightline will allow visitors to get an up-close look at the planes as well as talk to the pilots.
Rain or shine, visitors will have access to the Museum’s indoor collection of dozens of antique cars and pioneer aeroplanes. The Museum has put the final touches on its newest exhibit MGs & Micro Cars featuring more than 20 unique and endearing vehicles from the 1920s through the 1950s. Event admission is $12 for adults. Children under 18 are free. The Museum’s newly expanded Museum Store will be open showcasing a large inventory of books, diecast models, children’s items and more.
Gates open at 9:30 am. Food and refreshments, provided by French & Brawn Marketplace, will be available at the Caboose Pets are not allowed in the Museum or outdoor exhibit area but there are nature trails available to leashed pets and their owners on regular days.
