OHTM Hosts Final Program of Winter Education Series

Owls Head, Maine — Owls Head Transportation Museum presents its final Winter Education Series program of the season on Saturday, April 29, with a presentation on Katharine Wright, the independent and worldly sister of the famous Wright Brothers.

Author Harry Haskell previews his new novel Maiden Flight, the true-life story of the “Wright Sister,” Katharine, who left her world-famous brothers to marry the man she loved—the author’s grandfather and namesake. Drawing on intimate family letters, this engrossing book crosses the boundaries of fact and fiction to shed new light on an exceptional woman’s struggle for independence and fulfillment. In allowing Katharine to step outside of Wilbur and Orville’s shadow, Haskell sheds new light on the central role she played in their private lives, as well as on her often misunderstood contribution to their scientific work. Above all, Maiden Flight celebrates Katharine’s abundant store of what she called “human nature”—her lively and perceptive outlook on life, her great capacity for both love and indignation, and her acute and sometimes crippling self-awareness.

A former acquiring editor for Yale University Press and classical music critic for the Kansas City Star, Haskell is the grandson of the Star’s Pulitzer Prize-winning editor, Henry J. (Harry) Haskell. His previous books include Boss-Busters and Sin Hounds: Kansas City and Its Star and The Early Music Revival: A History. He lives in Guilford, Connecticut, with his wife, Ellen Cordes, a librarian at Yale University, and their daughter Lucy.

All Owls Head Transportation Museum Winter Education Series programs are free to the public (suggested donation $10). This program will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2017. Visitors wishing to view the Museum before or after attending a Winter Education Series Program will be charged standard museum admission of $14 for adults and $10 for visitors over 65. OHTM Launches Kickstarter Campaign

Owls Head, Maine - The Owls Head Transportation Museum is pleased to announce the launch of a campaign on February 20, 2017, to overhaul and restore their full-scale, flying 1917 Fokker Dr.I reproduction, the aircraft made famous by flying ace Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron. It is the centennial of World War I, and to commemorate this somber occasion, the Museum is embarking on a mission to return the Red Baron to the skies through the crowdfunding website Kickstarter.

“This tri-plane is an integral part of our World War I collection, and we hate to see it grounded for the 100-year anniversary of the Great War,” said Kevin Bedford, acting director at the Museum. “With no original examples of this aircraft in existence, it is especially important that we get the Dr.1 back into the air so that we can use it as a teaching tool to provide a living history experience for our visitors.”

In 2014, it was discovered that the Dr.I was in need of considerable repair and maintenance. From new fabric to cover the wooden wings and body to repairs to the intricate and delicate wooden structures and a complete engine overhaul, this airplane requires total restoration. Through Kickstarter, the Museum will attempt to raise the $50,000 needed to purchase a new engine, replace or repair the plane’s instruments, and repair and recover the wooden frame.

In telling the story of the infamous flying ace, the Owls Head Transportation Museum brings visitors face-to-face with the technologies that fueled the early 20th Century and teaches younger generations about why those technologies are still significant today. Once completed, the Dr.I will enlighten, entertain, and educate our visitors through first-hand interaction with the plane and will join the rest of the Museum’s WWI aircraft in the skies at their summer events.

The Owls Head Transportation Museum has a long history of restoring, repairing and even constructing aircraft in its collection. 2016 saw the reemergence of their 1917 Curtiss JN-4D, better known as the Jenny, after being grounded for several years. Now, the staff and volunteers of the Museum want the Fokker Dr.1 to be next.

Waterfront Nature Preserve Announced

Owls Head, Maine -  “In wildness is the preservation of the world" quotes Susan St. John who donated 32 acres fronting the Muscle Ridge Channel to the Georges River Land Trust last Thursday, evoking the spirit of Henry David Thoreau.  “Bob and I felt that we were stewards rather than ‘owners’ of the land on Ash Point and so by making a gift of this land to the Georges River Land Trust, the public will be forever welcome to enjoy it as much as our family has.”

St. John and her husband, Bob Rheault, who passed away in 2013, have long been staunch advocates for thoughtful human interaction with the natural world and, since its inception, strong supporters of the Georges River Land Trust.  In fact, a conservation easement conveyed in 1987 was the first to be held by the Land Trust, which celebrates its 30th Anniversary this coming year.  A conservation easement is a voluntary agreement which limits development and subdivision when donated to a qualified organization.  The Georges River Land Trust currently holds 45 conservation easements on more than 2,700 acres of land throughout its watershed service region which includes Owls Head and Rockland as well as the land area which drains into the St. George River.

While conservation easements protect the natural qualities of a property in perpetuity, they do not necessarily convey public access.  “In making the gift of the property’s full title to the Land Trust, Susan has greatly increased its value to the community, as she has made public access a condition of the gift,” said Pamela Dewell, Executive Director of the Georges River Land Trust.  “We are greatly appreciative of this family’s foresight and generosity,” Dewell said, adding that an additional contribution will help to maintain the property over the years as well as to construct a parking area in the future.

Georges River Land Trust maintains 17 nature preserves on more than 1,100 acres of land, providing public access and education as well as habitat for wildlife.  To learn more about the properties the organization maintains for the enjoyment of the public, www.georgesriver.org  offers a complete list of its nature preserves as well as trails comprising the Georges Highland Path -- more than 50 miles of trails made available by private landowners and maintained by Georges River Land Trust volunteers and staff.  The organization also conducts educational activities and special events celebrating the mid-coast region year-round.

The Ash Point Preserve will welcome the public to enjoy what St. John calls “ribbons of wonder” -- old stone walls, ancient apple trees, and spruce and birch groves.   A pathway leads to the Muscle Ridge Channel where “one can feel the pounding of the surf, play in the tide pools, and look across Penobscot Bay over North Haven, Vinalhaven, Hurricane Island and Heron Neck and seemingly to forever.”

Labor Day Weekend tradition continues with OHTM’s Vintage Motorcycle Festival

Owls Head, Maine - Antique and vintage motorcycles take center stage at the Owls Head Transportation Museum’s annual Vintage Motorcycle Festival and Antique Aeroplane Show on Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4. Owners of pre-1996 motorcycles are encouraged to exhibit and will be admitted free of charge. Show hours are 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. For the fourth year running, a special, designated parking area for modern motorcycles will also be set up in the main parking area. With more than 400 exhibitors in 2015, the Vintage Motorcycle Festival attracts antique, custom and racing bikes from all over New England.

From Harleys and Triumphs to Hondas and BMWs, visit the Museum to show off your vintage motorcycle. While the theme of this popular show is motorcycles, guests arriving in their pre-1996 vehicles, as well as organized clubs receive free admission to this show and all other Museum (non-auction) events. Clubs are encouraged to call ahead in order to arrange parking. Exhibitor gates open at 8:00 am.

Owls Head, Maine - The Texas Flying Legends, aerobatic legend Julie Clark, assorted WWII warbirds and aerobatic performances will headline the Owls Head Transportation Museum’s Wings and Wheels Spectacular Saturday, August 6 and Sunday, August 7.  Affectionately known as “The Rally,” the Wings and Wheels Spectacular is the museum’s longest running and most impressive special event of the season.

February School Vacation Week Workshops at OHTM

Owls Head, Maine - The Owls Head Transportation Museum is pleased to offer an exciting array of children’s activities during February school vacation week.  Beginning on Monday, Feb. 15 and extending through Friday, Feb. 19 the Museum will host workshops for students beginning at 10:00 a.m. each day.

Designed for youth ages six to 14, these fun educational workshops are free to the public and materials are provided. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged as seating is limited, children participating in vacation week activities must be accompanied by an adult.

Great Fall Auction and Flea Market promises bargain-filled weekend at Owls Head

OWLS HEAD, Maine - "You can find it here," that's the theme of the annual Owls Head Transportation Museum's Great Fall Auction & Flea Market that will be held Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1. From movie tickets to a Caribbean vacation, from collectibles to a brand new Fisher snowplow, there will be a wide variety of items up for sale.

The weekend event begins Saturday, Oct. 31 with a giant flea market, silent auction and auction preview from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm.  Doors open at 8:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, November 1, live Auction bidding will start at 9:30 am and silent auction bidding will be available until 11:00 a.m. at which time silent auction bids will close. There is no charge to become a bidder and admission to the Museum is free all weekend. Concessions catered by French & Brawn Catering and Marketplace will be available for purchase on Sunday, Nov. 1 during the live auction.

Trekkers’ Autumn Auction on October 17 – “Your Bids Support Kids”

Owls Head, Maine - Trekkers’ 5th Annual Autumn Auction will take place on Saturday, October 17, at the Owls Head Transportation Museum. This year’s auction will include many unique items, including African photo safari packages; a ride in a 1933 Waco biplane; pizza/pasta parties; and gift certificates for golf, getaways, services, seafood; along with other items to help get your holiday shopping off to an early start. The silent auction will also feature a wide variety of offerings, from gift certificates for personal training, design and landscape, to gift baskets and memberships at local organizations.


The auction preview will run from 6:00-7:00pm. The silent auction will begin at 6:00pm. At 7:00pm, auctioneer Bruce Gamage will start the bidding for the live auction items. An all-you-can-eat appetizer/dessert buffet will be available throughout the evening for $5, with a variety of delicious appetizers and desserts to choose from. was one of the featured vehicles in the 38th Annual New England
Auto Auction™ and sold for $115,500 on Saturday August 22. 

Owls Head, Maine - On August 22, 2015 the Owls Head Transportation Museum conducted its 38th Annual New England Auto Auction. Of 187 vehicles included in the sale, the Museum sold 150 vehicles on the block, for an impressive sell through rate of just over 80 percent. Total sales on auction day were $2,863,850.00 including the 10 percent buyers premium that is assessed to each sale. The auction represents a record-setting sale for the Museum; with both the gross sales and rate of sale representing the highest overall numbers the New England Auto Auction™ has ever realized.

Additional vehicles are expected to sell in the days following the auction as the Museum continues to work with consignors and interested buyers to facilitate sales. By 10:00 Monday, August 24, two of the passed vehicles (those that failed to meet reserve on the auction block): a 1963 Ford Thunderbird and a 1966 Ford Bronco Half Cab, had already been sold.

Owls Head Crash Sends One Patient To Eastern Maine By Life Flight.

Owls Head, Maine - At approximately 9:00 a.m. this morning, Knox County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a single vehicle crash on Ingraham’s Hill (Rt. 73) in Owls Head.  The vehicle operated by Jon Thompson, 72, of Owls Head was travelling north and by witness accounts slowly veered off the road.  Thompson struck a fire hydrant and telephone pole before flipping the car onto its’ side back into the road.  At this time, it is believed to have been a medical issue with Mr. Thompson.  He was transported to Penobscot Bay Medical Center by Thomaston Ambulance then transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by Life Flight.

Owls Head Fire, Rockland Fire and EMS, Thomaston Ambulance Service and Rockland Police assisted at the scene.

One in their 70s is unresponsive, being extracted at this time. Life Flight responded to Knox County Regional Airport.

RT. 73 (Ingraham Drive) is currently shut down starting at Region 8 to Buttermilk Lane and 73.

Model A Ford Club National Tour to visit the Owls Head Transportation Museum with more than 200 cars

Owls Head, Maine - On Wednesday, June 10, The Model A Ford Club of America National Tour will visit the Owls Head Transportation Museum.  The group will be comprised of more than 200 vehicles and 400 people from all around the United States, with some participants hailing from as far away as New Zealand.

The group will be visiting the Museum for the duration of the morning and an unrivalled collection of Model A Fords will be proudly displayed for all visitors to see and interact with. As this is a driving tour, cars are expected to begin arriving around 9:30 a.m. and will be on display on the Museum’s Runway 17 show grounds until early afternoon.

Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of this exciting opportunity to see a display of operating Model A Fords and visit with the owners of the cars. Various body styles will be represented ensuring a diverse representation of the Model A.

In addition to the exhibit of Model A Fords, visitors will have an opportunity to check out the Museum. Current highlights include the award-winning exhibition “Faster: The Quest for Speed,” a full-scale representation of the famous Wright Flyer, and a new exhibition: “The Artist’s Passion for the Automobile,” featuring a collection of more than 25 original works by artist Melbourne Brindle on display in the Museum’s newly revamped gallery space.

Owls Head Transportation Museum to host dual gathering of Lincoln Owners Club and Lincoln Zephyr Owners Club

Owls Head, Maine - The Owls Head Transportation Museum is pleased to welcome the Lincoln Owners Club and Lincoln Zephyr Owners Club to the Museum on May 30. The visit coincides with the Museum’s first outdoor car and airplane show of the season, the annual Spring Auto Show.  Though the Spring Auto Show is a two-day event (May 30 and May 31), the two clubs will attend on Saturday, May 30 only.

Between the Lincoln Owners Club and Lincoln Zephyr Owners Club, more than 40 cars are expected from points all of the United States and Canada, including some of the oldest Lincolns in existence. Highlights will include a 1921 Lincoln Touring Car and a 1921 Lincoln limousine, as well as an assortment of 1930s custom-bodied vehicles by coachbuilders including Dietrich and LeBaron.
Additionally, the Museum is excited to welcome special guest David Schultz on May 30. Schultz is currently the Chief Judge of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, past president of the CCCA (2012-2013), and current president of the Lincoln Motor Car Foundation that recently created the Lincoln Motor Car Heritage Museum located on the Michigan campus of the Gilmore Car Museum. Schultz will join the Lincoln Owners Club and Lincoln Zephyr Owners Club and will discuss the history and heritage of the Lincoln marque.

The group will be in Mid Coast Maine Thursday, May 28 through Sunday, May 31 enjoying the local scenery, touring local roads, sailing and participating in OHTM’s Spring Auto Show.
All pre-1995 vehicles and organized clubs are invited to exhibit at the Spring Auto Show, and vehicles from the Museum’s collection will be demonstrated throughout the weekend. Weather permitting, an antique airplane show featuring planes from the Museum’s collection will also occur on both Saturday and Sunday.

Event admission is $16 for adults and, as always, children under 18 and retired and active duty military personnel are admitted to the Museum and show free of charge. Refreshments catered by French & Brawn Catering and Market Place will be available for purchase at the Caboose during both days of the show. No pets are allowed in the Museum or on show grounds.

OHTM Receives six-figure bequest

Owls Head, Maine - The Owls Head Transportation Museum is pleased to announce the receipt of a generous bequest from the estate of Thomas Appleton Plaisted. Plaisted was a longtime Museum volunteer and a respected member of the Museum community. Plaisted’s gift of more than $125,000 will greatly assist the Museum as it continues to expand its programming and educational outreach initiatives.

The Plaisted family’s connection the Museum is profound. As descendants of the Longfellow family the Plaisteds are connected to one of the jewels of the Museum’s ground vehicle collection: a 1913 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost once owned by Alice Longfellow. The spectacular vehicle recently underwent a mechanical tune up at the hands one of the country’s foremost Rolls-Royce experts and is now among the most frequently demonstrated vehicles in the Museum’s operational collection.

On Monday, March 16 Executive Director Russ Rocknak met with Owls Head resident Dawn Swinton, the niece of the late Mr. Plaisted, for an official check presentation. Mrs. Swinton and her husband, Tom, are the executors of the Plaisted Estate. Mrs. Swinton told Rocknak that her uncle was a soft-spoken man, a highly successful engineer and a great champion of the Museum. She said that she hopes that the Plaisted bequest will inspire others to think about the Museum as they plan for the future.

 April Vacation Week is Kite Week at the Museum

Owls Head, Maine - Beginning Monday, April 20, students will have multiple opportunities to enjoy kite building workshops at the museum during school vacation week. 

Kite Week has been a favorite for years. Kite building sessions will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. each day. A variety of skill levels and ages are accommodated throughout the week, as a different project is offered each day. Class lengths vary.

Seating and materials are limited, and advance registration is encouraged, children must be accompanied by an adult to participate in kite building activities. Admission for visitors who would like to view the Museum in addition to participating in a workshop is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and free to persons under 18.

OHTM Winter Education Series concludes with "Motorcycle Racing on the Isle of Man"

Owls Head, Maine - The Owls Head Transportation Museum will host the fourth and final installment in their 2015 Winter Education Series on Saturday, April 18 at 1:00 p.m. with "Motorcycle Racing on the Isle of Man" presented by Jack Churchill and Charlie Vincent. Admission to the talk is free. In keeping with the Museum’s award-winning exhibition, “Faster: The Quest for Speed,” this special lecture series has focused on various incarnations of racing, exploring themes involving automotive racing, motorcycle racing and bicycle racing.

Jack Churchill, a motorcycle aficionado, historian, constructor and collector was among the crowd’s favorite speakers during the 2014 Winter Education Series. Churchill will return accompanied by Charlie Vincent — International Six Days Trial gold medalist and top 1960s off-road racer. The duo will address the Isle of Man races, both on and off-road. A selection of Vincent and Churchill’s own machines will be used to illustrate this fascinating topic.
