Midcoast Brass Quintet 2012 Personnel:

Peter Stuart

Peter, who is our first trumpet player, lives in Waldoboro and is currently the band director at Medomak Valley High School, a position he has held since 2001.  He attended Gordon College in Wenham, MA graduating in 1986 with his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and taught for one year in Jonesport, ME before coming to the Midcoast area. Employed by MSAD #40 since 1987, he taught elementary and middle school instrumental music before moving to the high school. While at Gordon College, he was a member of the Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and Brass Quintet. His trumpet playing has taken him to various places along the East Coast and Canada. In addition to being part of the Midcoast Brass Quintet, he is also a member of the Mondaynite Jazz Orchestra and Midcoast Community Band. He enjoys playing for local theaters and high school musicals and any other playing opportunities that arise. When not at school or playing his trumpet, you can find Peter on the golf course either playing or coaching the high school team.

Bruce Cole

Bruce, who is our second trumpet player, plays trumpet in the Midcoast Brass Quintet and the Midcoast Community Band. He is the primary trumpeter for the First Congregational Church (Camden) and he has played in more than 30 pit bands for Broadway Productions ranging from West Side Story to Crazy for You. Bruce, a 30+-year veteran in business, is the president of McNabb Marketing in Camden Maine. When Bruce is not working on a magazine or trade show, he can often be found with his family, playing trumpet in one of several bands in Midcoast Maine, or on the water in sea kayaks, sailboats, and just about anything else that floats. Bruce currently resides in Rockport, ME.

Carolyn Kanicki

Carolyn, our principle horn player, is in her 18th year of teaching Instrumental Music grades 5-8 at the St. George School in Tenants Harbor. In addition to playing with the Midcoast Brass Quintet, she is a member of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra in Topsham, State Ballet Orchestra in Portland, Ocean Park Summer Symphony at Ocean Park, and a member of the Midcoast Community Band in Thomaston. When not performing she enjoys spending time traveling or relaxing at home in Rockland with her husband Don and her two “feline” family members ~ Murphy and Maddy. “I hope you enjoy our performance this afternoon!” says Carolyn

Megan Kennedy

Megan, our principle trombone player, is the newest member of the quintet. She is a 2002 graduate of Medomak Valley High School, and has been playing trombone since she was 10 years old. Megan is a member of the Midcoast Community Band and the Mondaynite Jazz Orchestra as a trombonist and vocalist. She holds two Associate Degrees in Graphic Arts and Printing Technology and is currently employed by Camden National Corporation. Megan is proud to say that the members of the MBQ have been in her life for quite some time; Peter Stuart was her elementary band teacher, she met Bruce and Carolyn through the community band, and though she met Doug a long time ago, it only took a few rehearsals to strike up a relationship, and they were married last year.

Doug Kennedy

Doug, our principle tubist, is the Director of Bands at Oceanside High School in Rockland. He is a graduate of University of Maine, earning a Bachelor’s degree in music education. Prior to college Doug served in the Army music program, stationed at the Naval Amphibious Bass in Norfolk, VA and with the 101st Airborne in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. Doug is in his 23nd year of teaching in the state of Maine; he has been employed in the Katahdin School system, Millinocket Schools, as well as Bangor High School. This is his 13th year of teaching in the Midcoast schools of RSU #13. Doug’s extra duties find him as the musical director of the Mondaynite Jazz Orchestra (better known as MOJO) and performer in the Midcoast Community Band, Luna Madidus, and numerous musical productions in the area. Doug loves to spend time with his family and his lovely wife, who happens to be a fabulous trombone player to boot.
