Martin Marvelous as Sea Dogs Best R-Phils, 2-1
Brentz stays red-hot, powers 'Dogs to win
Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (13-24) bounced back from a two game losing streak and defeated the Reading Phillies (22-14) 2-1 Monday night at First Energy Stadium. The win marks the first time Portland has won in Reading this season.
Both teams were scoreless after two innings, before Portland scored in the top of the third. Derrik Gibson and Heiker Meneses singled to lead off the frame and put runners at the corners with no outs. Jeremy Hazelbaker grounded into a double play, but Gibson scored on the play to put the 'Dogs in front, 1-0.
Portland extended its lead with another run in the fourth. With two down in the inning, Oscar Tejeda doubled to right field and scored on Bryce Brentz' single to center. The hit was Brentz' eighth in as many at-bats, dating back to Sunday's 5-for-5 performance against Trenton.
Reading's starter Jonathan Pettibone was charged with both runs. The righty went seven innings and allowed the two runs on eight hits, he did not walk a batter and struck out five. Pettibone (2-4) was backed up by righty Lisalberto Bonilla. Bonilla allowed a leadoff triple to Kolbrin Vitek in the eighth, but retired the final six in a row, striking out five.
Due to an injury to scheduled starter Stolmy Pimentel, Chris Martin took the hill for the Sea Dogs a day early. The tall righty did not miss a beat and pitched four scoreless innings before the R-Phils notched an unearned run in the fifth.
Martin (3-3) finished five innings and held the Phillies to the unearned run on four hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. Aaron Kurcz was the first called upon in relief.
Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Reading threatened with two on and two outs, however Kurcz battled and left runners stranded at the corners. In the seventh Reading left another runner in scoring position and did not score. Josh Fields came on for the final two innings and earned his second save of the season.
Prime Motor Group Player of the Game: Bryce Brentz 3-4, 2B, RBI
