Backhoes, dump trucks, bulldozers, outriggers, big wheel loaders, road graders of any year will take center stage in this tribute to the working vehicles that form the bedrock of our modern transportation system. Individuals and businesses are invited to display their equipment. All exhibitors get in free.
On Saturday up to 250 Model As will arrive at the museum as part of the Pine Tree Chapter of the Ford Model A Club of America's 2012 New England Tour. Cars will arrive at 11 am and stay through 3pm. It will be the largest gathering of Ford Model As in Maine in recent history. The only time they will be seen all together is at the museum. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.
Both days, activities will include vehicle demonstrations and “Touch-A-Truck” where visitors will be able to get up close to a variety of vehicles and in some cases climb onboard. A sand pit will be available for young people to display and demonstrate their own earth movers. Demonstrations of all sizes and types of equipment will be going on throughout the day. “It's a heavy metal event the whole family will enjoy,” says Museum curator Ethan Yankura. Children under 18 get in free.
The antique aeroplane show begins each day at 9:30 a.m., weather permitting. Aircraft conservator Karl Erickson and a team of volunteers have been working tirelessly on getting the Museum's fleet of of World War I-era biplanes ready to take to the skies. Back on the flight line will be the 1917 Curtiss JN-4 or "Jenny" made popular by barnstormers of the 1920s. Also seeing action will be the 1917 Nieuport 28C.1 and 1916 Sopwith Pup, among others. An open flightline will allow visitors to get an up close look at the planes as well as talk to the pilots.
Rain or shine, visitors will have access to the Museum’s indoor collection of dozens of antique cars and aeroplanes. The Museum 's newest exhibition MGs & Microcars showcasing a unique collection of vehicles from the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
Event admission is $12 for adults. Children under 18 are free. All new and renewing members who sign up at the event will be entered in a drawing for a biplane ride aboard our 1941 Stearman. Drawings are held at noon and at 3 pm. The Museum Store will be open and features a large inventory of books, diecast models, children’s items and more.
Gates open at 9:30 am. Food and refreshments, provided by French & Brawn Marketplace, will be available at the Caboose Pets are not allowed in the Museum or outdoor exhibit area.
