Kittery, Maine - The Dance Hall, Kittery will be alive with drumming and dancing on Saturday, October 6, 2012. Master artists from Vermont’s Jeh Kulu Drum and Dance Theater will teach drum and dance classes throughout the day and then share their amazing artistry in an evening performance.
The day is co-produced by the Dance Hall along with Liz and Alhassane Fowler-Camara of Seacoast West African Dance and Drum who teach weekly classes at the Dance Hall.
Jeh Kulu artists, Ismael Bangoura and Sidiki Sylla will teach three drum and dance classes between noon and 5 pm. One of the classes is a current seacoast favorite, dundun dancing where people simultaneously play stick drums (dundunbas) and dance.
Bangoura and Sylla are both Guinean born artists who performed with world renowned companies before relocating to Vermont a decade and a half ago. They will be joined by fellow Guinean Simbo Camara who was an acrobat in dancer with both of Guinea’s national dance and drum groups.
The evening performance at 7:30pm will feature Bangoura, Sylla and Camara as well as Seacoast troupe Ballet Kakandé, and a few other surprise guests.
As Liz Fowler-Camara says, “We are so fortunate to have artists of this caliber right here in Kittery. I used to have to travel to Boston for classes and performances like this! We’re thrilled to have a venue like the Dance Hall right in our backyard, where we can teach weekly classes, host master classes and perform!”
