Damariscotta, Maine - Heartwood Regional Theater Company, now entering its 10th anniversary season, is deep into rehearsals for its annual youth production, in collaboration with Lincoln Academy. The popular Broadway musical, Godspell, will open on October 19th under the direction of Griff Braley, with a very enthusiastic cast of student actors and musicians. Chesterfield Associates of Westport Island, generously sponsoring ALL TEN seasons of Heartwood’s youth productions, is providing funding for this show, along with Heartwood’s Season Sponsor, Bath Savings Institution, and Season Youth Sponsor, Damariscotta Hardware.
Godspell was conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, best known for Pippin and Wicked. It features many well-loved songs including "Day by Day," "All for the Best," "Turn Back, O Man," and "Beautiful City." Solo and group numbers spring from a series of parables based on the Gospel of Matthew, performed by an energetic, young ensemble of actors and singers.
Begun as a college project, the musical moved to an off-Broadway debut in 1970, and Godspell has since been a favorite in professional revivals, including 2011, in colleges, and in high schools.
Don’t miss this uplifting, upbeat performance, filled with great music, improvisation, and fun (with Mae’s Café cookies at intermission)! And why not top off your experience, by dining at one of Heartwood’s Dinner Partner locations: Le Garage in Wiscasset, Newcastle Publick House, Best Thai, King Eider’s Pub, Savory Maine, Damariscotta River Grill, and Salt Bay Café.
