Augusta, Maine - School gardens around Maine will hold open-house events this weekend to showcase the effort of students and highlight the many benefits of educational gardening programs.
Participating school systems include Scarborough, Bath, Saco, Portland, Standish, Waldoboro and South Berwick. The open-house events are being coordinated through the Maine School Garden Network (MSGN), according to Kat Coriell, MSGN organizer. “School gardens are one of the best things to add to a school curriculum,” Coriell said. “School gardens get children outside, exploring nature and science, being active and learning about eating healthy foods and good nutrition. Kids will even try broccoli if they grow it.
“We would like all parents, friends and visitors to see the exciting things going on across Maine in our school gardens,” the MSGN official said.
Events will be free and open to the public. Visitors can expect a variety of garden-related activities, including garden tours, gardening demonstrations, games, food tasting and garden-themed artwork.
The Maine School Garden Network is a group of committed individuals who believe in the value of teaching children to garden and who encourage the development of gardening programs in Maine schools. The Network has as its mission to promote and support educational gardens for youth and to encourage school programs which teach healthy eating and environmental stewardship.
