Searsport, Maine - Children learn about Maine and maritime history while having fun with a variety of crafts, stories, games and other activities in HistoryCrafts, a new series of programs at Penobscot Marine Museum. Visitors can drop in for a different program every Wednesday and Friday, July 11 through August 17, any time between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The programs are free with museum admission, and free to all teachers and librarians with valid identification.
Each HistoryCrafts session features a different historical subject with a variety of crafts and learning activities for children from 4 to 10 years. The programs were developed for use in the Maritime History and Literacy Curriculum which the museum offers to Maine schools in a variety of formats. Museum educators will be on hand during HistoryCrafts sessions to talk with teachers and librarians about the curriculum and to display and explain the History Kits from which each program is taken.
Each session, including dates and activities, is described below.
Wednesday, July 11: Lighthouses: Make a model lighthouse, experiment with light, listen to lighthouse stories.
Friday, July 13: Fairy Houses: Learn about fairy houses, make a fairy house, listen to a story.
Wednesday, July 18: Lobsters: Learn about lobsters, paint a lobster buoy, explore a lobster boat, observe a live lobster.
Friday, July 20: Three Penny Boats: Make and sail a model boat, learn about different kinds of ships, enjoy a book about boatbuilding.
Wednesday, July 25: Native Americans: Learn about Maine’s native tribes, build model wigwams and canoes, hear Indian legends.
Friday, July 27: Rocks and Paper!: Make rock projects and paper "'zine beads," learn about Maine's stone and paper industries.
Wednesday, August 1: China: Make painted flags, play Chinese shuttlecock and jump rope, use chopsticks, hear a story.
Friday, August 3: Fish Printing: Make a fish print, visit the “Marine Science Lab,” play games, learn about fish.
Wednesday, August 8: Post Cards: Make a 3-D map, write a picture post card, design a post card, hear a story about a Maine village.
Friday, August 10: Compasses: Learn to use a compass, magnetize a needle, play compass games, make a compass rose.
Wednesday, August 15: Sailors’ Valentines: Make shell art, learn about trade with the West Indies, hear about life aboard sailing ships.
Friday, August 17: Signal Flags: Learn to use signal flags, make a signal flag placemat, listen to sea stories.
