The Clark Island WildlifeRefuge, a 50-acre habitat restoration and preservation site, is adjacent to Leonard Greenhalgh’s home. Over a 25-year span, Len has transformed the long abandoned granite quarry into diverse habitats that complement efforts to preserve the Long Cove and Weskeag River ecosystems. This project shows howprivate landowners can create a lasting legacy of preserved habitat. In addition to the tour, Alex Mas of The Nature Conservancy will discuss Maine’s Natural Resources Conservation Program which provided grant funds for significant wetlands restoration on the site.
Surrounding the house, a half-mile of stone walls encompass more than 50 flower beds, which will be in full bloom for this event. The Georges River Land Trust featured these gardens on their 2009 Gardens in the Watershed tour.
Topping off the evening will be refreshments and a catered dinner by Chef Kerry Altiero of Café Miranda. Located in Rockland, Café Miranda will provide a meal featuring seasonal and locally grown ingredients in their classic multi-cultural cuisine style. Watch the ospreys on their nest as you dine overlooking the main pond.
