Consider the Sea Urchin‏

Event Location: Merryspring Nature Center, Camden/Rockport, Maine

Event Date/Time: Tuesday, July 17 at 12:00 noon

Fisheries biologist Maggie Hunter will lead a presentation on sea urchins in Maine at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, July 17 at 12:00 noon.

Hunter’s talk, entitled “Marine Biologists and Fisheries Management- Maine’s Sea Urchin Fishery” will explore the connections between fisheries management and the sea urchin. These enigmatic echinoderms are an important part of Maine’s marine ecosystems.  Along with a brief discussion of urchin anatomy and life cycle, the talk will cover an overview Maine’s sea urchin fishing industry and the role marine biologists have in managing urchin and other marine fauna populations.  In addition to a slideshow, there will also be a demonstration with live sea urchin specimens.

Hunter is a marine resources scientist with the Maine Department of Marine Resources and serves as the department’s webmaster.  Specializing in shrimp and sea urchins, Hunter oversees programs that collect and analyze data on fisheries stocks and makes recommendations to fishermen and the public for population management strategies. With a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Maine, she has over 30 years of experience in the fisheries field.

This presentation is part of the Summer Talk Series at Merryspring, which is being co-sponsored by Camden National Bank and Jaret & Cohn Real Estate.
