Ellsworth, Maine - The New York Metropolitan Opera’s series of Hi Def encores continues at The Grand with Robert Lepage’s landmark production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, (including a documentary film on the making of this new production entitled Wagner’s Dream) running from Friday June 1st, 2012 through Saturday June 9th, 2012, with all operas at 1:00 pm.
Since embarking on the staggering endeavor of creating his take on Richard Wagner’s theatrical journey (arguably one of the world’s greatest), Lepage has tried “to be extremely respectful of the way Wagner proposes the story-telling.:” And, of course, today’s new technologies assisted in the interpretation. The result is in the critical and audience raves, as well as the sold-out performances.
In addition to presenting encores of each individual opera in the cycle, The Grand will present the film, Wagner’s Dream, a new documentary (directed by award-winning filmmaker Susan Froemke) chronicling the creation of this ambitious new staging.
The Grand is offering the full Ring Cycle of four operas for a subscription price of $62 for adults, $42 for students age 15 and under. Patrons can purchase reserved seats to individual operas in the series for $22 (adult) or $14 (students). The film, Wagner’s Dream, will be separate from the subscription series, with Grand film admission prices of $7 general, $6 senior, and $5 member.
Here’s the line-up for this breathtaking experience:
• Friday, June 1, 6:00 pm – Documentary Film: Wagner’s Dream- The film captures the creative birth of director Robert Lepage's ideas, the numerous technical demands that had to be met, and the multi-year effort to bring the groundbreaking and risky production to the stage of the Met. Admission is $7 for General, $6 for Seniors and $5 for Members. Run time: 90 minutes
• Saturday, June 2, 1:00 pm - Das Rheingold – Conceived by Wagner as a prologue to the Ring Cycle, Das Rheingold sets forth the dramatic story of the magical ring that contains the power of the world forged by gold stolen from the Rhine maidens, and sets the stage for themes of greed, treachery & redemption spanning generations in the three subsequent operas. With Bryn Terfel as Wotan and James Levine conducting. Run time: 2 hours 48 minutes (no intermission)
• Tuesday, June 5, 1:00 pm - Die Walkure - This extraordinarily powerful work of theater focuses on some of the Ring’s most interesting characters at decisive moments of their lives. With soprano Deborah Voigt in her first performance as Brünnhilde, Bryn Terfel again as Wotan and James Levine conducting. Run time: 4 hours 19 minutes (one intermission)
• Thursday, June 7, 1:00 pm - Siegfried- Part three of the Ring follows the journey of Siegfried, son of Siegmund and Sieglinde, from naive fearless boy to supreme hero. With Jay Hunter Morris (who took over the title role, one of the most demanding in the repertoire, days before the production’s premiere), soprano Deborah Voigt as Brünnhilde, Bryn Terfel as The Wanderer and Fabio Luisi conducting. Run time: 4 hours 18 minutes (one intermission)
• Saturday, June 9, 1:00 pm - Gotterdammerung- The Ring cycle concludes with a cataclysmic climax of betrayal and loss as focus shifts from the realm of the gods to the power and ambition of human beings. With Jay Hunter Morris as Siegfried, soprano Deborah Voigt as Brünnhilde and Fabio Luisi conducting. Run time: 4 hours 47 minutes (one intermission)
