AUGUSTA, Maine – Lithgow Public Library will host two events on May 16 and 17. On Wednesday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m., Barbara Walsh will talk about her new family memoir, August Gale: A Father and Daughter’s Journey into the Storm as part of the library’s “Maine Authors in May” series.
Chuck and Danny Piper of Sundog Solar Store in Searsport give an informational program on solar energy on Thursday, May 17 at 6:30 p.m. as part of Lithgow Library’s series on sustainability, “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” They will talk about how solar energy works, how to save money by incorporating it into our daily lives, and how we can work toward energy independence. Other topics will include solar hot water production, solar electricity, conservation, financial incentives, off-grid applications and environmental impact. The Pipers will also answer questions from the audience.
Walsh, a resident of Winthrop, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has worked for newspapers and magazines in Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Ireland. August Gale recounts her voyage into her family history and her research into a deadly 1935 hurricane in Newfoundland that claimed several of her ancestors. She has also written a children’s book, Sammy in the Sky, illustrated by painter Jamie Wyeth; it was inspired by her family’s first dog, Sam.
Chuck Piper has a degree in environmental studies from the University of Colorado and holds a certificate from the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). He spent 25 years in sales with a Fortune 100 company before opening Sundog Solar. His son, Danny Piper, has a background in construction and is a state-certified solar thermal installer. Both programs will take place in the Reading Room, and are free and open to the public. Copies of August Gale will be available for purchase at Walsh’s program.
