Green News: eMonitoring at Blue Hill Library
Blue Hill, Maine - Blue Hill Public Library has been selected by PowerWise Systems as a testing facility for the newest version of their product, the commercial 3 phase eMonitor. The eMonitor is a device that monitors electricity usage on a circuit-by-circuit basis. The data is sent to a web page where extensive displays show how much electricity is used on each circuit at any given time, and allows the user to compare usage not only from day to day, but also to previous weeks, months etc.
The displayed data also allows the viewer to recognize the electrical signatures of different appliances in the building and detect when the usage patterns may indicate a problem with the appliance, such as if it is using more energy than it should. A great advantage of the product is its ability to help identify inefficient usage of electricity and isolate so-called “phantom load”, where an appliance draws unnecessary electricity while in a dormant state.
According to Library Director Rich Boulet, "This is another step in the “greening up” of the Blue Hill Library. Along with the recent installation of an environmentally sustainable heating system, extensive weatherization of the library building, and reviewing our procedures for environmental sustainability, we are hoping that this tool will help guide us towards less energy consumption at the library. This should help improve both our operating costs and environmental footprint."
The eMonitor was co-invented by Nielsen Van Duijn of East Blue Hill and Carsten Steenberg of Penobscot. Members of the public are invited to log in to the Library’s “eMonitor Dashboard” to take a look at the developing history of the Library’s power consumption at www.emonitor.us using BHPL as the user name and emonitor1 as the password. For more information, contact the Library at 374-5515.
