Governor LePage Continues to Unite Mainers to Speak Out Against Domestic Abuse
Editor: David Mills

AUGUSTA, ME - Since becoming Governor, Paul LePage has traveled throughout Maine, speaking to thousands of people, to promote awareness about domestic violence. Once again, on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at Cheverus High School, Governor LePage will share his experience with domestic abuse and his thoughts on how Mainers can address the problem. The Governor will speak with Cheverus male athletes in an effort to convey, that men must be part of the solution, in order to reduce this violent crime.

For the past sixteen months, Governor LePage has drawn significant attention, through public advocacy, to the problems associated with domestic violence. Governor LePage believes Maine can demonstrate itself as a leader against the abuse. “Domestic violence affects us all here in Maine,” said Governor Paul LePage. “I am committed to speaking out about this dangerous crime, and am dedicated to working together with Maine people in making this socially unacceptable in our State. It is time we as men stand up and make domestic violence a men’s issue, not a woman’s issue,” continued the Governor.

Cheverus athletes have been proactive in their efforts to eliminate domestic violence and bring more awareness to the issue, and on Wednesday, these student athletes will present Governor LePage with a signed pledge to show their commitment to end the abuse in Maine. Governor LePage will also address Cheverus students by sharing his personal experience with domestic violence. In the evening, a public forum will be held at Cheverus High School from 5:30 to 7:00. Attendees will be offered the opportunity to have a discussion with a panel to generate dialogue, and share suggestions and ideas on how to end domestic violence, stalking and dating violence in Maine.

Panel members include:

Governor Paul LePage

John Morris, Commissioner, Maine Department of Public Safety

Kathy Slattery, District Attorney

Major Chris Grotton, Maine State Police

Julia Colpitts, Executive Director, Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence

Carlin Whitehouse, Family Crisis Services
