The Dance Hall Carnivale

The Dance Hall Carnivale

Kittery, Maine - On Saturday, June 2, 2012 The Dance Hall in Kittery will host its one year anniversary fundraiser in celebration of the historic landmark Kittery Grange Hall, built in 1928. The Dance Hall Carnivale! will include an artists reception, dance performances, live music, and the unveiling of a mural in the lobby commissioned by local patron Cary Mabley and created by renowned local artist Gordon Carlisle.

Performances by The Dance Hall's teaching artists will include West African dancer and drummer Liz Fowler-Camara and Alhassane Camara and their troupe Ballet Kakande; Belly Dancer Jennifer Cormier; tap dancers Drika Overton and Gay Nardone; as well as ballroom and more, will be accompanied by the music of the locally acclaimed band Aporkalypse Now. Following the showcase there will be an open dance party.

The Kittery Grange was built in the year that Mickey Mouse made his famous debut in Disney's Steamboat Willy; Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic; and the first television was invented. It was built five years after The Memorial Bridge, a year before the market crash that plunged the nation into the Great Depression and Prohibition was the law of the land. A history project of the Grange Hall and downtown Kittery is in the early stages.
