CAMDEN, ME - Knox Lincoln County Beekeepers (KLCB) will be at Merryspring Nature Center in Camden for the Plant Sale on Saturday, May 19th from 10 to 2.
Their exhibit features an observation hive with live bees. This hive gives an inside look at how honeybees live and work. Beekeeping equipment is available for demonstration and trying on. Free fact sheets and recipes are available. Several brochures are especially designed for children. Members of KLCB will be on hand to answer questions.
Knox Lincoln County Beekeepers is a chapter of the Maine State Beekeeping Association founded in 2003. Their mission is encouraging and supporting beekeeping as a hobby in the Knox Lincoln County area. Honeybees are vital to the pollination of all of our flowers, fruits and vegetables. In recent years, Varroa and Tracheal mites have invaded the United States. These mites and their associated bee viruses have killed nearly all wild honeybee hives across the country. The need for managed beehives has never been greater than it is right now.
Bees are fascinating creatures with a complex social structure. Many hours of enjoyment can be had by just sitting quietly and watching them go about their work. The best way to get started in beekeeping is to attend a Bee School. KLCB offers Bee School each spring. You not only learn what is required to manage bees in this environment, but also meet other community members that share your interest in beekeeping.
